17 inch Sq2.. RET/Quick Build/Plans Video

Well after reading Dekans rave report on Paul Cook's, Round One, I thought well ....... mmmmmm, interesting. Dekan doesn't throw out praise like that unless it warrant's such praise. It must be good, I got to have a look. So after looking at Paul Cook's video the agility and size attracted me most of all because I would like something around the 17 inch mark to throw around at work which is a small area. I thought, I would have ago myself, why not.

As Gene Bond pointed out there's some Thank you's to be had for starting all this. Gene Bond for his time and effort as well as

If there's anybody i have left out "Give me a Yell and I will fix it "

So to the Sq2. Started with a 17 inch sq of Epp and some Bamboo for some stiffness. Tried to keep it simple. Main body is 10 inchs wide and the tips are 3 1/2 inchs each. Dihedral is 1 inch each tip on the Original Plan I would use 2 inchs per Tip. Chord is 15 1/2 inchs and the elevator is 1 1/2 inchs wide. Bingo 17 inchs sq. The wing looks similar as the famous Hoot by crvogt. I went RET instead of elevons. Throw a rudder on for good measure and there you have it. The Sq2. Weight is about 4 1/4 ozs without Batt. The motor I'm using is http://www.hobbycity.com/UNITEDHOBBI...idProduct=5428
with a 6030 prop. It flys at mostly 1/4 throttle with this set up. 2 X 5gram sevo's, Batt are 500mah 3 cell but I'm going to try some 2 cell also.

The Sq2 is inspired by, The Round One, The Hoot and all the PBF's out their as well. It suits my needs for something small, light and agile to throw around on my breaks at work. Below are the Plans, Pics and video.

PLEASE NOTE: I have included an Elevator Mod. This is only an add on if you are not happy with the Tightness of the Loops ( Inside/Outside ).

Also if you are going to build the Sq2 instead of using the Original 1 inch Dihedral each Tip Mentioned on the Original Plan I would use 2 inchs per tip.

Sq2 (1 min 50 sec)

Video of the Sq2 in a Small area
Sq2 at Work (1 min 2 sec)

Sunny Sq2 Day (1 min 50 sec)

Sq2 in the Street (2 min 3 sec)

If you have got this far, Thanks for having a look

It flys a treat Box, the tight turns, the the tiny loops.

Just goes to prove Box that theirs no monopoly on good ideas.

It only vaguelly looks like a RoundOne....nice try from 2 pictures and 2 dimensions.

IMO get the basic dimensions and weight right and you have plenty of room cosmetically.
Now.....how do you think it stacks up to a Dart as a fun machine?

Talk about putting a bloke on the Spot. Well, I fly both in that area at work and I cant wipe the smile of my face with either of them.

Yep, the Sq2 is definately nothing new, just my take on all the great idea's out there. The video is a mixture of its 2nd and 3rd flight. So far in tight area's, it flys well, thats what I was after. Something to fly during my breaks at work. When I get the chance I'll see how it goes in more open space.

Yeah. I know what you mean.I still like my Dart but this seem to be a even better all round package for small spaces.

It easier to build and IMO flys well, if not better in some ways.....in fact I would recommend either to a complete foamie novice....but the RO/Sq2 plane has even less bits to cut out than a Dart...

As you say with the Hoot and PBF's in the mix it come from a good stable.

Gramps, it has about 2 degrees right thrust and 3-4 degrees down thrust.

I really like your fuse on the Round Square. Just like the Opus, you can hide all the electronics up in the fuse.

Thanks,
RE; ‘opus’ / monocock / tunnel fuse…
I find it serves several functions;
No stiffeners required,
Hide the ‘stuff’ and
…not nailed “it” yet >BUT<
I discover a ?tunnel-air-channeling-effect?
that makes a difference inverted AND upright.

ps...an agreeable / pleasant difference

Got to agree with you Gramps, a pleasent and agreeable difference they are, THANKS DEKAN . I just came across Tymbrewolfs Squirt. Really looks the goods. Looking forward to his flight report on it.

I flew the Sq2 in a spare Engine Bay today at work. Its a nimble little minx. The smallest area I have flown in to date. Even going out to a couple of calls ( got to earn my keep ) couldn't wipe the smile off the dial . Might even try to get a bit of video of it tomorrow.

Hi Funold. With the EPP I hot glue hinge it. http://www.superflyrc.com/pdf/SuperFly.pdf Sect 8. There's more info in the info sticky on EPP by leadfeather on the opening page of the scratchbuilt forum on all things EPP.
I have not had a failure yet with this method. I left the Sq2 at work so I will get a pic for you tomorrow of its underside and post it.

I flew my RoundOne indoors last saturday.

I had lots of fun cruising round in 15ft circles with one click of trim.

I was even able to put the tx on the ground and just let it fly round on its own!

Flew It round very slowly with full up elevator in 4ft circles, can't be bad....lots fun for very little buck
