Greek trireme- or am I nuts?
I've been out of building boats for a while (all airplanes lately), but I've suddenly got this crazy idea of building a model of an ancient Greek trireme. I think a true trireme would be a bit complicated (with all 3 banks of oars) but I've got the mechanics worked out to run a single bank of oars on each side.
Has anyone ever done something like this? I think it would be a fun challenge, and would look really cool on the water. |

It can be done....
http://www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk/for...?topic=20054.0 . . . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZyhCndB5-Q . . . I believe these are "Glenn's?" boats? https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/atta...mentid=3429201
. . .
There's another video of a model trireme, but I can't seem to locate it right now... There was also "Vfly's" Korean Turtle boat that he built using 2x4 stock. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=421729 Good luck with your project, there is a lot of info out there that you can referance. |

Umi,
thanks for the videos. They've given me some good ideas. Rich, I think I'm going to start tinkering with the propulsion system as a mock-up first. I'm teaching a high school AP Physics class, so I think it would be a really good demo for mechanical advantage, levers, etc. My goal is to make a system that anyone with basic building skills (and patience!) could assemble. I'll post whatever I come up with. Jon |

Maybe you could start with a simple row boat.
It's got me thinking about a single oar sculling sampan... |

It made me thankful for electric motors with propellers...

I don't see any problem with a Trireme. I did teh 1st US steam boat, John Fitch. There are vidios on my site at: www.jsgill.net The running water shots were dine at the Cabin Fever show in PA.

A few years ago when I was in college I did a longitudinal 1/2 model of a Greek Trireme so I could show both the inside and the outside of the vessel. I will bring it home and take some pictures of it if you would like. It is as accurate as the days of research could make it. I also have the hull plans.

Yes Trident, You is NUTZ!!! Certifiable even, but what a grand insanity it is!
Looking forward to following your descent into the madness of your model! Don't forget to post the engineering drawings! |

But a scan of the plans would be great. I have already archived a few sampan plans. |
