About a variety, cellphones, laptops, and I believe some TX batts have chips too. Very likely they're safety circuits, but what exactly do they monitor and how do they interfere. Do they reset? Could they provide genuine brand protection? How smart can they be? Thx in advance, Jurgen.

My Sony Camcorder has a smart chip in the battery.
What it means to me is that I can only use genuine Sony batteries

Most consumer Lipos have cell protection circuits on them to prevent over discharge and overcharge.

They are called PCMs. Protection Circuit Module.

Well Sony and a lot of other battery companies had a big legal problem coming at them from everybody at the same time.

So they quickly hit the " Do it right. Screw the cost. " Button.

Amazing how fast progress can occur, when you are faced with a potential of millions of lawsuits.

Result was the P C M & other catchy named systems. It worked beautifully.

You may find them easier if you look for them as a BMS, Battery Management System.

Are these why my cell phone battery has 4 contacts on what appears to be a single cell Li-Ion?
If I want to do a manual charge which contacts do I use?

Sometimes the extra contacts are used for an internal temp sensor.

IMHO, stick with the stock charger and avoid any future problems.

Generally, I agree with you.
However, I am having some trouble with this battery.
It was on the charger 2 days before reading charged.
I got the phone used and a replacement battery is on its way.
I was considering using one of my chargers to cycle the
battery and see if it is bad or just needed multiple charges.

just use a multimeter to work out what the polarity and charge away.

I used to charge my e71 with an accucel-6 at the field like this. paperclip into the tabls and croc clips onto the paper clips if you know what i mean
