"Britplan" Build Off - 1st January 2013 to 30th June 2013 Now 22 Finished Models!

The “Britkit Build Off” which ends on 31/12/2012 has proved reasonably popular, with 35 entries posting 32 build logs, which have been enjoyable, instructive and in some cases extremely entertaining. It looks likely that there will be some 23 finished models of huge variety by the closing date, ranging from a delightful 2 ounce electric R/C Dandy to a mighty 112” scaled up I.C. powered KK Junior 60 R/C, covering almost all types between and representing all the major kit manufacturers of the period. On the whole I would regard this as being a successful and worthwhile “contest” which has encouraged the production of some excellent models, I know I certainly enjoyed my builds and the completed models are now favourite performers. The poll for this build off will be posted on 01/01/2013, please be sure to go there, look at the photos and vote for your favourite.

Thanks for those who have expressed interest in another Build Off and given their views on the qualifying and closing dates. There was a clear majority in favour of 31/12/1965 as the qualifying date but the closing date proved to be a tie between those preferring 31/12/2013 and those favouring a six month period, so I have exercised my casting vote in favour of a six month build off, we can always start another one in July (I already have an idea!). So, here are the “rules”

Duration of build off; 1st January 2013 to 30th June 2013 (six months)

Model built from any plan which appeared in any “professional” UK published magazine (i.e. NOT club and society newsletters) before 31/12/1965. By plan I mean a full size feature plan, a plan shown in reduced size and subsequently sold full size by the magazine OR a detailed structural three view for which no full size plans were offered.

The model may be original size OR scaled up or down.

The model may be powered by the original method or by any alternative – e.g. rubber or IC power converted to electric, IC power converted to rubber etc.

The model may be flown as originally designed or converted to another flying method – e.g. F/F or C/L to radio, radio to F/F or C/L etc.

Here is a list (NOT exhaustive) of qualifying magazines: Aeromodeller (including Aeromodeller Annual), Model Aircraft, Ian Allen Model Aviation/Planbook series, R.C.M & E, Hobbies Magazine, RAF Flying Review (yes, it did have a model section, they published some Bill Dean designs like the Rogue). This lot should produce many hundreds of plans to choose from.

In order to qualify for the poll at the end of the build off the model must be completed, but not necessarily flown. As a minimum a photo and description of the finished model must be posted on the Build Off thread, but if possible a Build Log thread for the model is much preferred, please try and do one if at all possible.

As before I will keep the first post of the thread up to date with entries, progress and build log links.

When you have decided to enter a model, please post the details on this thread, if there is to be a build log please also post the link to that here too, particularly if it is to be in another forum - free flight or scale for example - once you start it, I will pick up and list any started on this forum, but can't look at all the others. If you title the build log thread "(Model) - Britplan Build Off January 2013 to June 2013" that would be a help. If you have any doubts about the eligibility of a particular models, just ask for a ruling.

I'll start the ball rolling, build log to follow.

I'm in - but with a delayed start as I am committed to making some progress on the old van seen in the background of my Junior build log.
My entry will probably be a Sharkface with a throttled PAW 049.
Many other plans are very tempting but I supect somthing very simple is best otherwise my resolve on the van might weaken.
If I run right out of time there is always the all sheet Simplex.

Does BritPlan extend to Aeromodeller Annuals?
A Schiffermuller would be cute, but maybe this is pushing the BritPlan concept a bit?

A vote of thanks to Sundancer for organising another great build off, can't wait to see the choices.

Sundancer, I'm in for the challenge as well! That Shaw "Envoy" looks nice, and I think I've got everything needed in my scrap pile to do it. Maybe only the covering and a handful of sundries to purchase.

I'll start a build log as soon as I start cutting balsa...

I'll second that and, after thinking about it, the January - June contest period is probably the better choice.

My entry will be a scaled down 1950 Aeromodeller plan Manx Monarch.

Im in with a King Harry from Aermodeller August '45. I...errrm... kinda built the the rudder last night because I forgot about the start date. Woops. So should I build another rudder or start a day late or just continue where I left off on New Years?

I wouldn't be that cruel! Your rudder is hereby deemed to be "legal"!

I'm in with a Keil Kraft 'Strato Baby' This model didn't qualify for the Britkit build off because although it is a Bill Dean design for KK, it was never kitted so it's got to be a plan, yes? Anyway, I plan to install the wireless and electric bits (sorry applehoney!) from a defunct parkzone micro Corsair. See you in the new year! Gary

Hi Ray, I'll watch with interest.
A Manx Monarch has been on my list for some time.
Eventually I'd like to build one for an American sparkie.
The original was powered by an Ohlsson Gold Seal, I was thinking a later Ohlsson, or Super Cyke and I saw one in a SAM 35 yearbook powered by a Contestor (have one of those too).
I read somewhere that it turns best on rudder, with the elevons just used as elevators.
Might be some interesting control mixing schemes to try out.
Good luck, but after your Frog wing, I'm sure you don't need it.
