Minwax or epoxy over Coverite ?

Hi all,

I want to fiberglass a plane, and have previously done so using 2 methods (1) Minwax with light cloth. 2) Finish epoxy over light cloth) on different planes.

However- I have a fully sheeted plane that has been covered in clear "Coverite" (cloth) covering. I wanted to know if anyone has ever tried painting on Minwax or epoxy over this in order to get essentially the same finish as fiberglassing ?

A friend does this, using Solartex and nitrate dope.

The process should work on Coverite, too. Use the nitrate, though, not epoxy or Poly C. The nitrate will eat into the Coverite, creating a strong chemical bond.

In my opinion, the proces is heavy. It does create a smooth surface, however.

I once covered a model in Coverite, and used a lacquer based automotive primer to fill the weave. Thje strong solvents in the lacquer ate into the covering, providing good adhesion.

The model was exceedingly heavy, but looked pretty good.
