black vs white dollar tree foam
ihave read alot of stuff on here about dtf and was finding out that it wasnt true. i was wondering why? then i realized it. i have been buying the black. most of the threads were taalking about white. lol. now things are making sense. black paper hard to get off. white, super easy. black foam takes poly well with the paper on. white not so much. black foam takes alot of heat to fold a wing. white is much more forgivable. . comments .extra finds.other things noticed.

I have found that the black covered DT foam is thinner, like about a mm thinner. I have not used it much just for that reason. The black is a different type of paper it seams. and yes, what a MESS trying to get the paper off. (and I did say trying) I have been shying away from it but I can see where it might have it's place, although at the moment, the only place I can think of is in the box at the store.

I have peeled it a couple of times. I found after wetting it GOOD on both sides then letting it dry then start it along the entire short side and role it on a piece of PVC or a broom handle, something that will pull it evenly and it usually comes off although sometimes it leaves a triangle of paper you may need to catch a hold of and get tucked down into the bottom of the PVC or what ever you are using. This method works beautiful on the white paper. It is true the black covered foam is a little bit thiner.

before i got into epp, i was using a simular product,
they were originally designed for backing paintings, and photograps. there was a white version (glossy paper), and a black version (matt paper) the black foam would be my coice if i went back, simply because the paper came off alot easier dry, where as the white i had to soak it. the shameful thing is, we dont have doller stores in the uk. we have £ shops, and the only crafting foam you get in there is the silly flexible foam that you make childrens decorations out of. you americans have all the stuff right on your door step it seems |

About the BLACK foam. Not the paper covering it like the $tree stuff but the black Elemers (Staples) foam. The black foam is more brittle than the white. I built a Divinity wing using the black as the main cord on a KFm4 build. The black foam will shatter almost like tempered glass. After smacking up my Divinity wing 4 times now, I am building a new one from the white $tree foam as it is far better suited to stress than the black foam (not the paper covering it but the foam it's self being black.) It sounds like a .22 going off when it pops. With the paper left on, it is rather strong and if you can take the extra weight in your build, it's a good material to use as it does seem to be a bit stronger with the paper on. Peal the paper off the black foam an be prepared to break out the gorilla glue, your going to need it.

i use the black foam with the paper on to make the center spine of my fuse and the horizontal stabilizer, ailerons elevator etc the cover in the white foam with no paper. the black foam paper will take poly and not peel.this plane came in at 15.5 ozs auw.

So is the black papered dtf the same foam just thinner and harder to peel? I want build an edge or yak w/8gr. motor and 6 gr. esc. My local store only had the black papered stuff, but I will check again.
So I wet it w/ a sponge and let it dry some what and it peeled off in one sheet, sweet. |
