Red Bull Air Race
Is San Francisco the only place in the USA we can see them? 2010 calendar hasn't been posted yet, not sure if every year they have them in San Fran also. Would be sick to see it on the East coast.

yup. Detroit/Windsor last year. It's astounding. It's the most awesomely presented "package" for the general public to consume that aviation has... it's all right there, down on the deck, and cooler than words can describe
...it's all so staged for mass appeal. it's great. The planes are flying circles off in the distance waiting to enter the course, you can hear the heavily pitched and fast running engines. The voice-over comes on to say "XXX you're clear to enter the course, smoke on"... plane comes down the line, turns his smoke on, and hits the course. When he's spent his load they typically pull vertical and do whatever aerobatics nonsense on the way up and exiting the course. They try to build the drama of the times and the racing between the pilots, but... it's just the ducks nuts, it really is. The planes aren't set up for pure aerobatics, but it sure as heck makes you want one. I want the racing wingtips most of all. One of these days... |

Will see what rocket racing will do, but RedBull is it if you want something right in front of you for your viewing pleasure... and Detroit/Windsor is good for this too because the course doubles up on itself so there's nothing you're missing. Most of the ones over water you can see it all, but this one is half the box it seems. |

Been to the San Diego one, because, well, it's hwere I live
They race at: -Detroit/Windsor -Abu Dhabi -Barcelona -Budapest -Perth -Porto -London It's a worldwide race, originating from Abu Dhabi. Pilots from all over too, the youngest being Pete McLeod out of Canada. This years winner was Paul Bonhomme with 67 points And yes, RBAR is something I follow closely |
