I will post the results. Well I hope it flies pretty much like a normal polyhedral wing. I hope it turns left when I give left rudder and the same for right. Other than that I really don't have any expectations, other than fly relatively slow. I think with the forward sweep speed would prove disastrous. The wing would likely fail. Vne (velocity never exceed I think is the right term and acronym) is assumed to be around 40 mph due to divergent structural stability inherent with the forward sweep. OK the history and why of such an odd design. The club I belonged to at the time had a wight lifting contest that they did once a month during the other events. The rules were 500 sq" as measured by span times chord (tip to tip). .25 for power. I designed and built the wing for the contest. Never got the rest of the plane finished before moving. The carried wights got up towards 12 lbs. Rudder only seemed to do better at the extreme wights. I thought polyhedral might offer the most stability and turn performance. At the wights the planes were flying at they also tended to start a slide side ways (usually unrecoverable) towards the low wing in all but the very shallowest turns. So now for the rationale. Forward sweep would help to control span wise airflow (I know I could have achieved that in other ways) and the polyhedral for stability and turn performance. Much like a polyhedral winged glider. The bonus of the forward sweep and polyhedral was free sq inches, about a 7% advantage. Straight across from wing tip to wing tip is a shorter measurement than if you run a tape down along the spar following it down and back to center and then forward and up to the other tip. A straight measurement vs following the angles. So it was rule bending a bit, a small cheat. Now about the big paddle tips. Those sideways slides. Well the big paddle tips were intended to push the low wing (the direction of the slide) back up. Does any of this stuff work? Beats the heck out of me. There was a fellow flyer in the club that was a bona fide rocket engineer for a large company in the area. I did not design this thing in the dark. I had a lot of input from him. As far as the little extra wing area the design gave me, I did go to the club officers and discuss it. They said that they way the rules were wrote it was legal and besides it was so darn different that they wanted to see the attempt. Entertainment value you know. I will post the results as soon as I fly her. Video if I can. Now how this thing flies with out wight cargo will I am sure be a lot different than it would with about 12 lbs of lead in the belly. So I may never get full answers as to it suitability as a cargo carrier. As a side not the original name was going to be CARGOYLE a play on the words cargo and Gargoyle. Fitting I still think. The lines sure ain't pretty. I hope that I have answered your questions and was easy to follow. Ken |
