Hi all,
Well my stinger arrived today (yay!) and I'll be building it tonight after work. Two questions please: 1. When I maiden this plane on the stock power system using a nano-tech 3S 2200mah battery, what is the sweet spot CoG wing setting (mm) for a nice floaty plane? 2. After I install the 'Don's' 4000 plus power setup (heavier), and change to a 4S 2200mah battery, do I need to alter the CoG balance point at all? Thanks for any confirmation ;-) |

The CoG is not determined by wieght. It will be at the same spot as with the 3 cell.

"As for the cg, push the 1800 pack against the foam ledge towards the nose, it's that simple. The cg will be near the REAR of the finger holes. Plus, you still have 10mm fore or aft, it doesn't have to be perfect. The CG as listed in the maual is a little too foreward. Full throttle into the wind and it will fly. Get some altitude and trim. Mine needed 2 clicks of up. The cg will be the same with 2200 lipos. " My 2 cents on control throws: "And you're rates sound good but perhaps elevator on low rates should also be 50%. Add a little expo too, like 35%, to soften things up. You can launch on low rates with no problems. After around 45 flights, I still have my ailerons set at 50% travel. At 100%, the roll rate borders on violent. It looks funny to, not very scale. You start to wonder how the lipo doesn't fly out of the fuse when rolling." My stinger flies well with the cg at the rear of the finger holes. I have moved it around a little bit but this seems to be the "sweet spot". As for the power upgrade, I haven't done any but the cg should be the same. Cheers |

Thanks NCRealEstateGuy and supercollider, very good information, much appreciated ;-)
Hey, has anyone ever noticed how if you want it to rain all you have to do is wash your car or build a new plane ... I guess the maiden will be a little delayed, it is pouring down! ... oh well <sigh> . |

Hi all, I got the maiden of the Stinger in and have to say it is a very nice predictable little plane.
Using the stock power setup on a nano-tech 3S 2200 25c-50c the plane took off quite nicely, I did notice the roll to the left at launch but because I was already aware of it, this was not a problem .. touch of right aileron and she straightened out and flew away nicely. I launched on low-rate 30% elevator (+25 expo), and quickly realised that this was not enough, so I switched to 60% elevator (+25 expo) and climbed out much better. I completed the flight and landing with that 60% elevator setting, much more reaction and better response. The ailerons were set at 35% (+25 expo) and this felt nice when low, using 75% at high climbing rolls and it was rolling almost like an Sbach! (bit too much for a jet), I'll probably drop aileron high rate to 60%. The rudder was set at mostly 50% and occasionally 100% with no problems. The weather was very much not ideal as it was gusting up to 20mph winds but the stinger handled the gusty conditions quite well with no bad tendencies. The nice red paint on the fuselage was very good for visibility and at no time did I have any orientation problems. After a 3 minute flight on mixed throttle settings, I brought her in and she glided into the wind very nicely for a soft slide onto the grass. The 3S was measuring 3.92v per cell so there was heaps of flight time left in the battery. The only thing I think that this plane is lacking is speed as the standard power system is fairly tame and doesnt really get the adrenaline flowing. On that note I can't wait to modify the plane with the 'Don's' 4000+ EDF/ESC setup on 4S which is currently in transit. Overall a very nice plane, I am happy I bought it and when it is quicker, it will definately become a favorite. If your on the fence and unsure about getting the Stinger, I can highly recommend it, it is a fun plane! I'd like to thank all the members of this forum as your experiences and information over the last 156 pages has definately taken the guesswork and nasty surprises out of the maiden, and made it a very enjoyable time. Cheers ;-) |

Hi all,
my Stinger made its first two flights today on a frozen lake. Needed only a gentle throw and few clicks of pull trim to fly it nicely. CoG was at the rear of the finger holes. Stock setup balanced perfectly with nanotech 1,3Ah 3s 45C at the front end of the battery bay. Slow speed performance is good due to its low weight. Max speed was not that fast that I expected but it pushed some fast low passes with screaming sounds Flight time was limited. Stock edf was in ok balance. Plane seemed to vibrated slightly with 10% power. Other than that it was all smooth, not loud. Is the 64mm metal lander fan a direct replacement? Anyone modded the stock fan with other blades, like 10 blade from hobbyking? |

I believe the only ones that require some carving, are the Mercury Alloy units. I'm LOVING my Wicked/HET setups in my Stingers... Hands down, the best setup for the plane IMHO. Light, fast, and AWESOME sounding! |

I asked Don about the 10 blade fans as I was originally interested in them as well, I was advised that they use HUGE amounts of power and therefore will really shorten your flight time. I ended up following Don's advice and bought a 4000+ setup for the Stinger which will give you @100mph speed on 4S for much less Amp usage. A lot of people have installed the Dons setup and everybody seems happy with them so that might be a good indication for you. Hope this helps your decision. Cheers |

think of it like a prop, since an EDF is still a prop. props are generally two blade and they use a certain amount of power. now go up to a 3 blade and they use more power, but you also have to play around with pitch and diameter to minimize the draw. go to 4 blade and the draw is more. got to 6 blade or 12 blade and I think you get the point.

This is my third EDF.
The first being the UMX Mig15 (still flying), the second BH F86 with gyros (retired) and then this. Last week I finally had my first full blown flight after 5 failed launches. I've had 3 more flights since then. I cut a big notch under the wing behind the finger holes for a third grasping point for my index finger for a better toss into the air. 5 minutes with a Zippy 2200mah 3s. Works great. The plane is a wonderful design and can do loops and rolls with aplomb. At first I was getting a little discouraged by the failed launches. I tried the underhand approach that really didn't cut it for me. The other 4 tosses resulted in a broken nose, busted fan, cracked fuse. All of them were fixed and now she flies as well as my little UMX Mig15 but is a lot easier to see in the air and a lot faster. I will do an upgrade one day but right now I'm just happy that she flies well and I want to get comfortable with her before diddling around with her guts. It's good to be part of the Stinger Club! |

yes, if you want to stay with 3S, the 4800 is the way to go. it won't give you the same performance as the 4000 on 4S, but it'll be pretty snappy.
