FTX Kanyon, DF-4J XXL, VRX RH1047 BF-4J
I havent found a thread about this HUGE crawler, so I opened this one! I will use it as a FPV platform with some mods.
High speed in stock config is only 5kph. I will use a stronger 550 35T motor on 3s to get more speed (Around 20kph to 30kph). Stock motor is a 540 60T. The RH1046 uses the same chassis, but has already a 550 motor and unlocked diffs. Seems that it has 3 diffs. It is easier to lock diffs than the other way around. So maybe for someone it will make more sense to buy the almost half priced RH1046 and add wheels and body shell of your choice! Links for the RH1046 at the bottom of this posting. The FTX Kanyon, DF-4J XXL, VRX RH1047 BF-4J is sold under different names in different locations. UK, available in gray only. FTX Kanyon Germany, available in black, grey, camo, yellow, pink and orange. DF-4J XXL China, available in black, red and orange. As a kit too. (I cant find the roller anymore!) There you can find the kit version. https://vrxracing.de.aliexpress.com/...5e11459eHnm3PQ German distributor "df models". http://www.df-models.info/epages/646.../BasicLine_XXL Parts German shop: http://www.df-models.shop/epages/830...rawler_XXL__71 Tuning parts German shop: http://www.df-models.shop/epages/830...LineXXL-Tuning Link to the German manual: https://www.df-models-shop.de/images...nual%20(1).pdf English manual for the ESC, and English and German manual for the DF-4J/RH1047/Kanyon at the bottom of this posting as PDF. Included: DF-4J Crawler Modell RTR 2,4 GHz transmitter 60 Turn Crawler Motor Crawler ESC Metal gear servo 3-wire NiMH 7,2 Volt - 1800 mAh Charger Specs: Scale: 1:10 XXL - RTR 60 Turn brushed Crawler Motor Length: 560 mm Width: 305 mm Height: 287 mm Wheelbase: 340 mm Weight: 2400 g Wheels: 125*52 mm, 12mm hex 3 locked diffs. Oil shocks, adjustable. Mine came with already oil in it! Several options to mount the shocks to the frame and to the suspension arms. Pinion 17t Adjustable motor mount Mod that should be done is to strengthen the mount of the body shell.
Height correction.
For height correction I have used one of the holes at the lower suspension arm at the front and rear to get it higher. Has worked too. But you will probably get torque roll with this set up. This guy has placed the shocks vertically
DF-4J with 160mm wheels (25mm axle wideners, maybe 20mm would be enough too!) size comparison to 10428-A with 125mm wheels. Wheels (Descreption says 155mm, but they are closer to 160mm) https://de.aliexpress.com/item/32886...b4314c4diVLxEi Axle wideners 25mm. At the side of the hub the hole of these axle wideners is a bit smaller. They have to be drilled out to around 4.8mm to make them fit. https://www.ebay.de/itm/Aluminum-12m...72.m2749.l2649 I have used M3 20mm length nylon spacers to get the body higher to match the 160mm wheels. That wasent high enough and I am using 36mm M3 nylon spacers now! Strengthening of the body shell at the rear. I have cut the included velcro in two pieces and glued them to the body shell and to the rear bumper. This gives a lot more strength to the rear body shell. UHU por in addition to self adhessive velcro gives a very strong bonding. The velcro would never come off this way! Anyways, I dont recommend to keep the spare wheel mounted at the rear without further modifications. Body shell is too week to carry the weight and will split! Unlocked differentials I was told ZD racing, HSP and VRX 1/10 are using the same differentials. I was able to find them on AE for below $5 shipped. Much cheaper than on the VRX page for $17. https://de.aliexpress.com/item/33003...9f7a4c4dW5Xbsu Feel free to post and link your mods or useful informations, I will post them here! Acording to "themountain" in posting #104 these aluminum hubs are fitting, and are much cheaper than original ones! https://www.aliexpress.com/item/3283...22fd4c4dXipu9Q https://de.aliexpress.com/item/32830...22fd4c4dXipu9Q Alternative 550 motor for more speed and torque. See posting #111 Surpass Hobby 550 12T/21T/27T/35T shipped from AE for around $10. Needs minor mods to make it fit. |

VRX BF4 or RH1046 shares the same chassis. It has open diffs, I think a 19T motor, bigger wheels and a different canopy. I have seen it in Germany much cheaper than the RH1047 for around 110€. A crawler conversion kit to lock the diffs with a 60T Motor included is available. As far as I remember! If any of our Kanyon experts are watching I have a battery question. The stock one (NiMH) comes with what seems to be a Tamiya connector (?)
I'm just about to purchase one of theses trucks and have been looking at a spare battery. I'd prefer one with a much higher mah and seeing as the ESC can be easily programmed for LiPo there's lots of options but quite a few lipos are too big (long or tall) for the battery holder. There's one pack ( identically sized to the original) that is 5000mah but it's a NiMH pack but does come with a Tamiya connector.... As I'm averse to converter cables (just another failure point), and already have a large NiMH charger, what would be the problems with a like for like upgrade? |

No problems with the battery change ...only that NiMh doesent have the same characteristics than Lipo.

Yep
Charging is very different although essentially safer, NiMH lose power more if stored and the surge power output is lower. You do get almost equal power throughout the battery cycle though. Not good for faster trucks but swings and roundabouts really for a crawler. I'm far more used to lipos now and I am still undecided. I think I'll buy a tamiya/deans adapter and try the Kanyon on both the the stock battery and an equivalent Lipo battery to see what the performance differences are before committing to either type. Thanks |

...... and another question.
Anyone know the dimensions of the tyres? I'm already planning for winter runs |
|
|
|
|
|
125x52mm, 12mm hex
I have ordered these ones! 155mm, other page of the same tires says even 160mm OD. https://de.aliexpress.com/item/32886...4d3f4c4dLwvLFL I think I have to set the body shell higher, and I think I will need axle wideners! Not sure if it will work! |

Thanks
Surprisingly few stockist give that information. I'm thinking about building or modding chains Quote:

Got it now! smaller wheels for tracks, right?

Oh, chains for snow! Do these small chains really help with deed snow?

I knew you were interested but hadn't realised you had one (or were getting one)
I suppose the choice of bigger wheels will require some bodywork or body-fitting changes as the existing body already struggles for clearance with the stock tyres. I don't think I'll be going down that route until I've done the more essential basic mods but it could interesting to watch. I'm not going to get that complicated Not really. Might at scale depths but really the chains are for traction in the softer ground and slush we get during the winter. (We don't often get real snow here) |

I have a DF-4J XXL in orange. I wanted a big car.
I have already put the body shell higher by using the first hole of the A-arms. Posted a pic in the first posting. To make the bigger wheels I will try to make the body shell higher by using nylon spacers. Maybe further mods at the body shell will be needed. |

You might well need to trim and possibly change the suspension alignment. I'll watch your progress with interest.
For me the process will be: A couple of test runs stock out of the box. Chassis reinforcing and body-taping Suspension tuning And some testing to determine battery types needed Then a gradual modding process to suit my/our other needs. Every stage in the process will result in more runs. As is normally the case for me now, much of what I do will be dictated by financial constraints, so the process will take longer. Such is life |

Same here! This the last car I have bought! At least for this year!
Is taping the best way to strngthen a body shell? I guess fibre tape should be used, right? I was thinking of lack. Something like this: https://www.galileo.tv/tech-trends/d...unzerstoerbar/ Or maybe similar lack? |
