Two of my last three trucks had Goodyear tires from the factory - the odd one had Yokohama's. I replaced the Goodyears at approximately 30-35K. The Yoko's went to about 45K. I replaced all with BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/As - the best all around tire for a truck IMO.
I read/heard somewhere that new car tires have about 80% of the tread of off the rack tires, but have never seen it stated as a fact. |

I have heard that before also but my buddy who owns a tire shop proved me wrong. They are the same just they typically put the cheapest tire they can find that rides nice on new cars

I never had problems with Goodyear tires, but have had issues with poor service in company stores, I find the independent stores can be much better, depending on the owner, I guess.
Having said this, I always found Goodyear to be more expensive and have generally avoided them except once when I was matching a full size spare that was oem. Best tires for performance I have owned were Michelins and BF Goodrich (Radial T/A from years ago). As far as price. I had a customer who owned a service station and two Goodyear franchise stores. I was talking to him about tires and he informed me about something. This was 20 years ago, but basically, most retail places sell a cheap and low rated tire, and a high end tire, and the profit isn't all that different, they make a good of their profit on valve stems, balancing and alignments. I was telling him that at the phone company they always got what seemed like really good tires, but I never saw these tires in retail, like one brand I remember was Delta. Anyway, to cut to the chase, he ordered me some tires that were better performance rating, but not the low end tire, and not a "name brand", which were only at the time about $10 a tire more than the el cheapos. I was quite pleased. I have always either been in the position to get the best tire I can buy, or to get the best tire I can afford. Also now I have a van I use very little, so the tires tend to dry rot before mileage becomes a concern, plus I rarely drive it on the freeway, so it is the cheapest thing I can find, which isn't really that cheap, currently Kumho, which I thought were made in S. Korea, but found out after I bought them and looked up the code, they are made in China. I don't drive them enough to know if they are all that good, I did put it on the freeway a while back and it seemed to have a bumping issue at freeway speeds, like the tires had developed a bit of a flat spot from sitting for so long. Not sure if that is a quality issue or not. They seem to be holding up pretty well with regard to sidewall cracks and drying out. I had Michelins on it before and had to replace them due to age, I found out that when I bought them, they were already a couple years old, so now I have to look for the freshest tires I can find, and those codes are on the tire as for date built. This cracking and crazing issue is partially due to ozone, which is high here in Atlanta, UV rays, and lack of use as tires, according to what I read, when flexed, distribute the oils throughout the rubber, so sitting without driving is not good. Especially bad on RV's and trailers. I did find a product called "303 Aerospace Protectant", you can order from them directly, if you get on their email list they do have free shipping specials and the like, but it seems to be a good product. Some folks also buy covers for their RV tires. This protectant is really good for windshield wipers, any vinyl or rubber you want to protect, I think it is much better than Armorall from my use of it. |

The don't have the traction that other brands have, unless you get up into the fancier tires like the Tripletreads, and then they make more noise than regular tires. Most tire wear problems I've seen athat aren't related to alignment issues normally have more to do with inflation and driving style. Concrete on and off ramps are great for wearing the shoulder treadblocks on tires when you drive like a maniac on the off ramps. |

The Girl's 03 Camry came with 'em. After she did a donut on a freeway in the winter, we went a got Blizzaks-what a difference! We change out with Michelins in summer.

never had good luck with GY. Always seemed to wear very quickly. By far the best value I ever got for tires was (gasp!) at Wal-Mart. Some no-name brand I put on my 97 Chev K1500. They hardly wore at all, had as good a ride as one could expect with a truck, and were less than 500 bucks for the set.
Last set I got for the wife's 07 Malibu was a Falken Ziex. Less than 100 bucks each installed, and they ride really nicely. No unusual wear noticed yet, but only got them in June. One thing about GY I recall..... they seemed to begin to wear badly right away, even though I was assured my alignment was fine, and the car drove perfectly. |

I put a new set of Goodyear ComforTred touring tires on the Benz last year and have been very happy with them so far. They are the quietest and smoothest riding tires I've owned. I've put about 25K miles on them so far and can't see any appreciable tread wear yet, nor loss of performance or ride quality. Traction wet or dry has been entirely satisfactory. The car is AWD so no wheelspin on even the most aggressive take off, and braking traction has been excellent. We'll see how the next 25K goes.
I bought them based on reading numerous positive reviews from actual owners. |
