What about using one of the recommended setups for like the Grim Reaper or other larger wings on the Assassin? |

It's been done, but obviously ups the weight. Make sure you get your CG right.
That's one of the nice things about re-winding a little red 2812. It's easier than it sounds, it's actually kind of fun to do the re-winding, it doesn't change the weight of your wing, and keeps everything nice and light, but multiplies the power. And the wire only costs about $12. Not too many posts ago in this very thread, we included links, videos, and diagrams of the most popular re-wind for an assassin. I love my Assassin with the re-wound 2812. That said, I'd still say take a second look at the Reaper. It's definitely my favorite plane overall, and easy to make fast, especially if you go to 4s on the batt. |

what Mah 4's do you run with that setup?

It's a Turnigy 30c 2.45 mAh 4s; puts out 877 watts with the 7x6 Hobbyking prop.
It's good for 5:30 flight time - combat flying pulling streamers with more than a few full power passes leaves about 3.79 volts per cell at the end of the flight. |

So the rewinding of the 2812 looks simple enough.. if i go that route with the rewound 2812, which prop/esc combo would I need and would it handle a 4S battery? Should I stay away from the radio shack wire as some has suggested? Thanks again for all the advice! |

@BlueDevil
I don't know anybody that has tried the little red motor on 4s. You're on your own Take notes and report back. EMP vs APC- Can't speak for the 6x4 range but in a 7x6 The EMP style pulls more amps than the APC versions. Enough so that I smoked a couple of 3530 motors before I figured it out. Do you have a wattmeter? Get a wattmeter! If you decide to rewind, go for it. It's easy enough and it's bang for the buck the best upgrade you can do </ninja opinion> Definitely stay away from the Radio Shack wire. I have burned every motor that I have rewound with that stuff, the MicroDan high temp wire is the way to go. Keep in mind that it's still a six dollar motor, the next weak point is the bearings, keep them lubed. The Assassin will tolerate a bigger motor (like a 3530) but will most likely need a bigger battery to balance it correctly (a 2200mah in my case). Fun to fly but you do end up with a much heavier plane. What is your skill level and what kind of flying do you want to do? |

Yes I definitely need a wattmeter.. I had quite a bit $$ tied up in electric RC several years back and got out of it for several years.. just trying to get bits and pieces back as I can.. As far as skill I can fly pretty much anything.. 3D aerobatics.. I did photography when I was into RC years ago.. I use to have an Edge RC Devastator Wing that was a rocket! Probably 80+ mph. Really miss that plane and the Assassin seems like it may scratch that itch! I wouldn't say I would win any competition awards haha but I'm pretty sure of myself and myself and my next door neighbor just do combat with the small wings we have now and I REALLY love speed.. Right now all I have is the Dynam SU-26M to satisfy my 3D itch and the Nitro Mini Pop Wing that goes about 65.. just want something a little bigger and a little faster.. Ok, enough rambling :-) |

I understand the way of thinking that buying a different motor is less work, and therefore preferable to re-winding a 2812. And even, at face value, cheaper than a 2812 + the price of a spool of wire.
BUT... a spool of wire can rewind at least 10 motors, if not 20. (I dunno, haven't gotten to the end of my spool yet.) It comes in handy for motors that go bad, or experimenting with different numbers of winds, and so on. Considering 2812's are about $6-$8, you can have a number of good, high-speed motors over time for less $. Plus, for a hands-on, tinkering, like-to-get-in-and-understand-the-mechanics-of-things kind of person, like I am, the re-winding is just plain enjoyable. And then there's the fact that you can put a 2812--stock or rewound--on lots of different planes, especially the CTH planes (Scythe, Assassin, Widowmaker, Roswell, Pelican, Albatross... am I missing one?). That means continuity, which means cost-saving. One extra motor or set of screws can be a backup for all of your planes, instead of having to buy different parts for different planes. Bottom line, though: a rewound 2812 gets you going fast in the air. No doubt about it. |
