Just stumbled upon this thread tonight, and I've seen doculam mentioned before on this board. How big of a model is it reasonable to cover with this? Planning on getting a couple of Pat Tritle's 1/8 scale planes, and Jim Young's 1/8 scale Waco. I'd like to end up with something that looks like painted fabric, or at least something a bit more "scale" looking than solite.

There really isn't anything out there that looks like painted fabric at that scale, except maybe silk. The scale weave pattern is so fine that as soon as you paint it, the weave is filled. But, if you look at any well finished fabric on a full size, it is difficult to see the weave. Some are hard to distinguish from metal finish.
I have used painted doculam on 'fabric' planes and it look fine, if the finish is a flat one. Have not tried a 'polished' finish as I have not found a good paint for it. If you use Doculam on Tritle's designs be careful with the covering iron. When covering, get out all the wrinkles you can before using the iron. Doculam is especially aggressive and will warp one of Pat's frames in an instant. The seams of doculam will also stand out after painting, especially lighter colors, so pay attention to where you have them. If you don't need to paint, try Parklite or Solarfilm. Both are about the same weight as painted doculam and are opaque. charlie |

My 1/6 scale Stearman was doculam covered with no issues.

I used a sponge dipped in dope to gently coat the doculam with untill I had an even/cloudy finish. Once that had dried I lightly misted my tissue with water and layed it over the doculam, having the tissue damp made it easier to remove any wrinkles. I also applied and second coat of dope over the tissue while it was wet using the sponge method, after the tissue had dried I sprayed a couple of light coats of paint. -Reuben |

The satin finish is simple with doculam. Just paint it with satin interior house paint. Acrylic latex. It is the only type paint I use on doculam.

Hey guys when I was researching doculam "new stuff" type laminating films I wanted to try the CP type lightweight low temp materials, and I ended up buying something at a much better price. The label says "ultima nap II" from mybinding.com, but I labeled the box with a sharpie as being "CP 1.2 mil" lightweight.
Am I correct in assuming that this is the same stuff? I don't see much reference to it on RCgroups. |

Whazzat? $20 for a 25" x 750' roll of 1.2 mil film? Sounds like it's worth a shot.
It's funny that you'd happen to post right now because I've also been researching these laminating films within the past couple days. I'm trying to figure out the relative thicknesses and weights of these Doculam-type films as compare to the EconoKote that I normally use, but I'm not coming up with much... |

The weight of the films themselves is less, but, you have to be careful about how much paint you put on them as it can add up fast.

I tried the same thing as Ben with tissue over the doculam and it didn't take long for it to peel off in sheets. Hopefully ben has more luck with it than me as that's a nice plane he has there.

I made sure the dope had soaked right through the tissue before I painted it in the hope that it would stick better to the doculam but I am wary of flying in any amount of moisture -Reuben |

This is all new to me, but it is very light and appears to be strong enough for small models. See the web sight for more info, or send Mike an email.
Weight of MYLAR COVERING examples. 10 micron clear 1/2 mil 13.6 gms. per sq. metre 15 micron clear 3/4 mil 20.4 gms. per sq. metre see http://www.freeflightsupplies.co.uk/ or mike@freeflightsupplies.co.uk I sent an order in on Feb 14 and received it to-day Feb 20 Excellent service. John |

I've used docuam on larger models, and it works just fine. Larger being the 64" 7lb 4 oz Stearman, and the 54" 4 and a half lb Tiger moth.
I've had pretty good luck using Humbrol enamels. |

Got tired of surfing for Doculam type products. And having to pay shipping and not having a clue as to what would actually end up on my doorstep.
Searched locally and found a Supplier almost instantly. .. Dohhh! Very friendly . Knew what I wanted it for even. Refused to sell me ..anything.. until I torture tested samples for my purposes/ suitability: Multi foot long samples of , 1.2 mil, 1.5 mil and 1.7 mil low temp Laminating films...which he gave graciously .. for free. Newfound respect for Brick and Mortar shops staffed by Humans. Also told me that Rattle can paints adhere V well to the surface as Most Display signs are done thusly. Not exactly sure what he was on about. But I got the feeling he was revealing a trade secret of some kind. Now to test these films on suitable guinea pigs : Rubber scale stick 'n tissue, Depron builds, perhaps even as reasonable substitute for that horrid packing tape on foam.. which invariably goes on very sloppily, despite one's best efforts. Will post back when done with it. |
