Mum is the word!
Sand off 95% of the spackle, do a layer of 3 m 90 on high, then use gloss paint if you can. The lam sticks well to the gloss , if you use flats, you will need a layer of 90 over the paint prior to lam.

Great news !
What prop and cell count will you be starting out with ?

6S , 6.5x5 to start. I'm gonna do a bench check to see how the amp draw changes in flight unloaded.
I also have 6.5x6 and 6.5x6.5 standing by.

You could just test it before you throw it up there.
Plug in battery
Give a no load @ full throttle without prop for 2 seconds
Put on prop and nail it for 2 seconds, then chuck it up in the air and fly
After landing, pull prop and no load for 2 seconds

All data will be in .csv file, you will easily see how the amps drop as you throw it and it picks up speed. You will see climbing, diving, straight and level, etc. I cant wait to see the .csv files !!

Ah...... I would stick with the 6.5x5 and keep the 6 and 6.5 pitch blades in my flight box.

Don't ask me how I know.....

Peter, I could go 5S. Maybe that would be a better starting point.

Brad,
I'd still run 6 cells with the 6.5x5 but just keep your power on runs short until you are confident that your temperatures are OK.

What I would do is take off, do one 6 second run and land straight away then check your motor temperature. If OK, repeat with longer runs so that you gain confidence that you won't damage the motor.

What is safe for you might be different to mine because of differences in ambient temps, motor cooling (running a scoop?), length of WOT periods, battery voltage under load, length of cool down periods etc.

Don't stress, it'll be fun!

3 flights so far with Mega 16/40/1.5sc, 6S 4500, 6.5x5. Everything looks good. Might cautiously try 6.5x6 tomorrow . Will try to get video soon.

ICE file looks good, how were the motor temps ?

You do realize that you are at about 160 mph pitch speed with the 6.5x5 prop ?

Hows 155-160 mph feel in that wing ?
Expect about 10-15 more mph with the 6.5x6 ........ and only run that prop if the motor was nice when it landed with the 5 pitch prop !!

VIDEO !!!!!!!!

brolley,

6.5X6.0 not only starts with higher AMPs, it also unloads fewer % AMPs at max speed.

So with that in mind:

If you have 6.5X5.5 Pylon prop take the time to run it before 6.5X6.0

Spend more time gliding inbetween your full throttle runs so the motor has a chance to cool down more (after all it will be generating more heat due to larger prop than 6.5X5.0)

For first flights with higher load props, make fewer full throttle passes in order to gauge motor temp.

Incremental prop size increase, Fewer passes, More time gliding.....gradually change these things with subsequent flights.

Good luck,

Gryphon

I have had too much time on my hands waiting for my motor. I think I have my paint scheme down. What do you guys think?
