Does anyone have experience with strapping batteries to the outside of the SW? I seem to remember seeing photos of an EZ* (or similar plane) with batteries on the outside. Though the SW is pretty roomy, it might be nice to have all of that room to properly organize electronics for those of us with a complex setup. It would also allow for more precise balancing.
Other than what I assume would be a minor change in the airflow around the fuselage (and therefore flight characteristics), are there any major disadvantages to keeping batteries on the outside? -Taft |

I set a new personal distance record with my SW a couple weeks ago in the desert. The total flight time was about 38 minutes with the max distance at 6.5 miles. I think this is the max range using a 3s 4,900mAh battery. I'll need to put two 4,900's in parallel next time. But first I'll need to reinforce the wing so it can handle the extra weight.

I did 6 miles out and back using only 3300mAh on a single 3S 4Ah battery setup averaging a little over 6A most of the way,
so you've probably still got quite a bit of margin left with 4900mAh. Just have to have the patience to fly at max efficient speed. At first I thought you were fighting a headwind, because your plane was only cruising at 20mph (mine does about 25-26mph at 6-7A), but it didn't seem to increase much when you turned through 360 to check the wind or when you turned to come home. That speed seems a little low, but yours should be more aerodynamically efficient than mine, as I'm still running without the canopy. Do you have landing gear or something else big and draggy that we can't see? ian |

Congrats!
Rsowder - Congratulations on your 6+ mile flight ; it inspires rookies like myself to follow in your footsteps.
If you don't mind me asking, how do you plan to reinforce your wings for the added weight? Cheers mate! |

Not sure yet. Daemon had some good suggestions on how to do that. I just need to search back through the thread to find out how he did it. I think he used carbon strips on both the bottom and top of the wings. Randy |
