brushless esc + brushed motor?

probably a stoopid question but:

is it possible to use a brushless esc w/ a brushed motor? i would rather buy one esc now and be able to upgrade to a brushless motor later.

does a brushless esc contain the timing circuitry for alternating the current to the coils in the motor, or is that circuitry part of the motor?

Not possible. A brushed ESC just varies the two wire power source to a motor using simple PWM. A brushless ESC is powering three individual coil circuits using 3-phase AC. It's a completely different beast even though the final effect (varying motor speed) happens to be the same.

thanks for the reply.

why are brushless motors so expensive then? it sounds like all the timing circuitry is in the esc, and i imagine they are simpler mechanically than conventional motors.

Well brushless ESC's are more expensive than brushed ESC's because there's usually about 3 times as many expensive FETs in them.

Brushless motors are more expensive than brushed because (a) the economies of scale production - the speed 180/280/30/400 motors we use are really intended for stuff like electric toothbrushes, cordless drills, etc - Mabuchi make them by the tens of million and we cream a few hundred thousand off the top. (b) the mechanical design means hat the armature coils can be wound on machines

For brushless meanwhile they are, on the whole (a) a "niche" product only made for a few tens/hundred thousand aero modellers around the world (probably 50% of them read Ezone!!) and (b) the coils are in the "jacket" around the motor. These have to be hand wound by a single tribe of Amazonian virgins in remote village in the foothills of the Andes (and they don't come cheap!)

PS That last bit is not ENTIRELY true
