Yes, that kind of receiver I'm waiting for. Almost all FBL units support Spectrum satellites and SBUS. And Spectrum satellite is cheaper than full receiver and that makes even more sense in using FBL.

BTW: why Spectrum satellite is so cheap in comparison wit full receiver ?
About the same price when you need two to get diversity... but compact and works great for helis, not to mention all the top FBL systems use em. I just hope with the "new radio" Hitec takes this into consideration.

But "technically speaking" satellite is not the "full receiver" (neither just antenna). Am I right ? In my understanding satellite makes just part of the "job", the rest does main receiver or FBL module. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It would probably be accurate to say satellite is "just the radio". It receives the radio signal and passes it on to a receiver core (be it a full receiver or fbl controller) where it is interpreted and split into individual servo signals.

Satellite does not interpret signal, split it and etc.
That means it is a simpler unit, potentially cheaper. What's true ?

A satellite receiver is the same as every other receiver, except it only outputs the servo data as digital data. Hence its basically a standard receiver without the code to drive the servos. Code to drive servos is pretty easy to do. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the code for the satellite is the same code as what is in the receiver, just a section of it disabled to not output the servo pulses.

With the old 35/36/40/72MHz receivers, you could increase sensitivity, reduce noise, etc, etc by using more filtering and better quality components - making it more expensive. If your running a 8/9/10/etc channel model, chances are its going to be expensive and more likely need that extra performance - thus justify the extra cost.

However on 2.4GHz most of the filtering and decoding is done on the RF chipset which is common across the complete radio manufacturers product line. There are still chips that can increase the sensitivity of the receiver (and make it a full-range, rather than park flier), but these are in the <$1 price range. So the cost difference in manufacturing between a 4 channel receiver and a 8/16/etc channel receiver is minimal. The price difference is just marketing.

Now there is additional costs involved between making a telemetry and a non-telemetry receiver (type approval costs + additional parts), so this difference will make a small price difference in development costs. Also telemetry would require more processing/more memory/etc, so may require a more powerful microcontroller to do the processing - hence pushing up the cost.

As an example, you can take a Optima 6 receiver and probe the servo output pins and get channels 7/8/9 out of it. Even the data port is still there exposed and working - as shown in other threads. Hence the manufacturing price difference between the Optima 6/7/9 receivers is the extra antenna cost, extra pins and different plastic case.

Before people start commenting about how this is ripping people off, you'll find this is done all the time in products - TVs/Cars/etc/etc. Good example off the top of my head, is that BMW uses the 2.0l petrol engine tuned to the same performance as a 1.6l/1.8l/2.0l engine - depending what the ECU has been programmed to. You can get a low tuned version and have the ECU reprogrammed for more performance.

The Spektrum satellite's still interprets and processes the signal exactly how a standard servo driving receiver would. But instead of packaging it up and sending it out as servo pulses, it packages it up into digital data to send over the serial line out on the connector.

I see. Satellite does almost all the job, has all hardware and software as a full receiver. Price - only marketing issue.

I'm waiting for Hitec Rx with Spectrum satellite or/and Futaba SBUS output.
It will make FBL installation simpler and cleaner.
Or Hitec may introduce its own data format and send data in this format. I think FBL manufacturers will support third format.

BMW is not alone. VW does the same with its engines.

I kinda hope they get into the Gyro business and build a heli gyro/Rx combo... I'm not holding my breath, but it would be a nice addition to the "new TX".

Or build gyro/Rx around existing FBL system (like Spectrum did with Beast).

I realized where I got idea that satellite is not full receiver: it's smaller than typical Spectrum Rx. How wrong I was.
