Contest

2009 +Blue Skies Over Arizona,April 4,5


The 2009 Blue Skies Over Arizona is finally being announced!!!!!! The contest will be held in the beautiful town of Eloy, midway between Phoenix and Tucson.The contest will occur on Saturday April 4th and Sunday April 5th.We can also fly on the field Friday,April 3rd. This is a gigantic free flight field and the sector we will be flying at is a 1/2 square mile with no obstructions. A perfectly flat field! Members of the Sage club and the Chandler Bowl will be hosting the contest.
Philip Brister is the unofficial Contest director. Peter Brocks from the Phoenix
Model Airplane Club will be the AMA Contest Director.
Philip Brister is the scorekeeper and the primary organizer of the contest.
Aradhana is in charge of the automatic timing system
shhhhh! is in charge of this thread.

Only Full Open AMA Insurance is acceptable. Park Flyer insurance is not acceptable.


Since this is an AMA sanctioned contest...

1) All pilots must have AMA insurance and proof of AMA insurance.
Proof is your current AMA card or an e-mail/fax from AMA headquarters
showing proof of insurance.
2) No AMA insurance...you can't fly..there are no exceptions!
3) At the field, sign in on the AMA event form.Print your name,AMA number,
and address.

The Phoenix Model Airplane Club is allowing us to use their Free Flight Field for the Contest. We are guests and can ONLY use the field on April 3,4,and 5.

Register your name and frequency in this thread.
Registration will be closed April 1,2009 at midnight. Philip needs time to make up the scorecards and assign pilots to their heats.

Registration fee is $30 to be paid at the start of the contest.Snacks,drinks and barbecue hamburgers,hotdogs , potatoe salad,etc,. will be provided on Saturday and Sunday. No one goes hungry here!!

We encourage pilots of all flying abilities to sign up.We are here to have lot's of fun. We find that for most pilots, contest flying is the fastest way to improve one's flying ability!!

Pilot's Meeting starts promptly at 8:15am
F3k tasks
- six tasks on Saturday
-four tasks on Sunday as well as five fly off rounds on Sunday.
-Three heats per round
-one throw out round
-Top ten to twelve pilots into the flyoffs.Scores start over.Five flyoff rounds.
-Plaques awarded to the top five pilots...1st through fifth.
All this is subject to the approval of our CD Philip Brister

Field directions

-Take the Toltec exit....Exit 203 off of I-10 freeway.Driving from Phoenix you will turn right on Toltec Road.From Tucson,turn left on to Toltec Road.
-Check your odometer!!!! The field is 5.5 miles from the Toltec exit..exit 203
- At 1.0 miles you will come to a four way stop. You will cross Battaglia (st.?)
-At 2.0 miles you will cross Alsdorf. There will also be an old broken down
brick house on the right side of the road.
-At 3.0 miles you will cross Milligan ave(st.)
-At 4.0 miles you will cross Philips ave(st.)
-At 5.0 miles continue past a crumbling down house...very close..about
1/2 mile to go

- At 5.5 miles turn right onto a short dirt path which will get you onto the free flight sector of the field.
-Follow the dirt road adjacent to the drainage ditch for 1/2 mile and then you will be onto the radio control sector of the field where the Dlg contest will be held.

Hotels,Camping


Rvs and camping are allowed on the field.There are no Rv hook ups.

Camping, Hotels, Motels and other Facilities

Camping is allowed at the contest site, but please recognize that this is state land, used by us with permission of the leaseholder, which must be kept clean and safe.

There are a number of gas stations, restaurants, hotels and motels at Toltec Road and I-10 (Exit 203):
-Super 8, I-10 & Toltec Rd, 520-466-7804
-Red Roof Inn, I-10 & Toltec Rd, 520-466-2522

There is another group at Sunland Gin Road & I-10, about 3 miles NW (Exit 200):
-Motel 6, 4965 N. Sunland Gin Rd, 520-836-3323
-Days Inn, Sunland Gin Rd. at I-10, 520-426-9240
-Sunland Inn, 7190 Sunland Gin Road, 520-836-5000

Additional facilities will be found in Casa Grande and Eloy:

Contest tasks


Saturday:
Round 1-Task H; 10 minute window:unlimited throws,increasing time:
30sec,45,sec,1:00 min,1:15,1:30,1:45,2:00 minutes.
Round 2-Task M: 10 minute window,five longest flights,unlimited throws
2 minute max flight.
Round 3-Task J: 10 minute window,6 throws,three longest flights,3 minute
max flight.
Round 4-Task P: 10 minute window,4,3,2,minute flight in any order,unlimited
throws
Round 5-Task B: 10 minute window,Last flight,5 minute max flight, max of
6 throws
Round 6-Task C: 10 minute window, Next to last and last flight,6 minute
max flight,6 throws.

Sunday:
Round 7-Task E: AULD,3 minute max flight;3 throws.simultaneous launch,
one minute between throws.
Round 8-Task M: 10 minute window,five longest flights,unlimited throws,2
minute max flight.

Round 9-Task P: 10 minute window,4,3,2,minute flight in any order,

Fly-Off Rounds on Sunday (Top ten pilots advance):
Round 1-Task E: AULD,3 minute max flight: 3 throws, simultaneous launch,
one minute between throws.
Round 2-Task P: 10 minute window: 4,3,2, and 1 minute flight in any order,
unlimited throws.
Round 3-Task M: 10 minute window: five longest flights,unlimited throws,2
minute max flight.
Round 4-Task C: 10 minute window: last two flights scored,no flight over six
minutes,max of 6 throws.
Round 5-Task B: 7 minute window: last flight scored, 5 minute max
flight,max of 6 throws.

Must land within 30 seconds of end of flight window.
Off field landing is a 0 for the flight. Must return to the designated
flying area to launch.
Top ten pilots advance to the fly-off rounds
Some adjustment to the tasks may be necessary due to
weather/time/etc.

Eloy Dlg field test


A bunch of us from Tucson and Phoenix flew Dlgs at the Eloy field on Sunday. This is the biggest field I have ever flown at. Thermal after thermal after thermal! We all had a great time! even barbecued some hamburgers!!
Seems like those Phoenix guys really like those Blasters!!

I don't know, Jim was up for most of my throws! He would not come down. George was not deterred though, he was up for over 90 minutes!

RcGeorge caught a boomer thermal at the Eloy field. Came down after 96 minutes because his eyes and neck were hurting!!

Yeah,,I took a photo of his TX flight clock 63 minutes and 59 seconds into his 96 minute flight.
