EXI 500 Thread
There are 2 versions of the Kit:
EXI 500 Carbon fiber frame version at Xheli (new RED Canopy version) EXI 500 metal frame version at Xheli (new RED Canopy version) Xheli Coupon Codes here More Review info HERE EXI 500 Budget Build info here Note: The plastic version actually has lots of metal in it! What does the Metal version have that the Plastic does not?: CF frames instead of Aluminum Metal Tail box instead of plastic. CF and metal tail servo holder instead of simple plastic Metal tail blade grips instead of plastic Metal front boom holder instead of plastic. CF fins instead of plastic. Lightweight paddles instead of solid plastic Metal washout arms instead of plastic CF boom braces instead of aluminum. As I see them posted, I will add potential Motors, ESC's, Blades and Servos people have used. Potential Motors: 500 size, 5mm shaft diameter NOTE: Remove ANY label on the motor or it will come loose in operation NOTICE: I advise NOT to get the Typhoon 500H at this time if you want to run 6S because no one can seem to find 11T pinions!!! There are people running the Turnigy Typhoon 500H with 5S packs with success. Turnigy Typhoon : 1800kV (Lots of power, really measures to an 1850-1900Kv motor so use 11T for 2700-3000RPM. Do not use 10T or it will strip maingears) 3mm mounting screws 6mm in length or 8mm with washers (make sure screws don't hit internal wires) Turnigy 500 Typhoon at Hobby City Hobby King 500H Xheli 500 Optima/Helium 1500KvUse 13T with 100% throttle curve for sport flying or 14T pinion. Xheli 500 motor 1620Kv, About same power as Align500L, good bearing quality. Align 500L : 1600kV (Well known in the Trex 500, use 13T pinion) 500L motor at Amain HobbyMate HB3650 : 1700kV (Performs well, use 12T pinion) 3mm mounting screws 6-10mm in length Hobbymate HB3650 from Dealextreme HB3650 from HobbyZoom HB3650 from rcmodelpart Pinions: (Kit comes with a 5mm shaft 0.6 Modulus (M0.6) 13T hardened steel pinion). This pinion was not suitable for the Turnigy Typhoon 500H. An 11T is recommended. TR 500 12T - 24T Pinions at Heli Direct TR 500 12T - 17T Pinions at Ready Heli Revco HARD ONE 10T-26T Pinions at Ready Heli Potential Cyclic Servos: Servos opening in the frame and tail are 36mm x 17mm Hitec HS5245MG Mini digital (Metal Gear, digital, good power and decent centering.) Hitec HS225MG Mini Analog (Metal Gear, good overall bang for buck) Hitec HS225BB Mini Analog (Nylon Gear, BB, inexpensive power for the $) Hitec HS82MG (Sport flying, inexpensive known reliability) Align DS510 (Mini digital) Futaba 9650 mini Digital (Nylon gear but Metal gear upgrade available) Tower Pro MG930 Digital Metal Gear (Hobby City Inexpensive, unknown performance) Fitec 9250 Nylon gear (awaiting feedback) Potential Tail servos: Futaba 9257 (not for 6V) Align DS520 (Mini Digital) Tower Pro MG930 Digital Metal Gear (not a fast servo for the tail but cheap) Fitec 9257 Fast Analog (T3Beatz uses these) Potential ESC (best to use external BEC and disable any internal BEC) I recommend an ESC with super soft start ONLY or you may prematurely burn up a one way bearing or sleeve. Volcano 60A w/o BEC from Xheli (60A if running 6S) Hobbywing 80A w/o BEC from Xheli (80A if running 5S) Align 60A ESC (if running 6s) Use an external 5A BEC Batteries (6S) (Hobbymate on 6S 12T/13T), (Typhoon on 11T/12T) BlueLipo 6S 3000mAh 20C, 25C, or 30C Hobby City Turnigy 2650 or 3000 6S batteries Hobbypartz Gens Ace (better than Blue Lipo and high charge rate) Batteries (5S) (Typhoon on 13T) Blades: Xheli 430mm 3D Pro blades 430mm Blades at Heli Direct Build notes: Download the Trex 500 manual for some helpful information. Use the Trex linkage lenths for the head to start with. Initially I recommend mechanically setting up for +/- 12 collective and +/-8 cyclic pitch but use your swash AFR or swash mixing to get +/- 10 and +/- to start with. IMPORTANT! Re-apply Blue loctite to ALL metal to metal screws. you can wait till you have it all build up but do it BEFORE you maiden your helicopter. I found the blade grips and tail grips were loctited so you may need to heat them to remove and inspect. If it's hard to remove, don't force it, heat it or you can snap the smaller 2mm screws. Tail box and head are 2 placed you don't want to forget to make sure has loctite. Fast spinning and high vibration will turn those screws out faster than you think. Some people have reported tail blade grip screws (2mm x 6mm long) have snapped either on dissassembly, in a crash or in flight. Recommend you replace that with 2mm (6mm long) threaded socket head cap screws. (RTLFASTINERS.COM or MICROFASTINERS.COM). Some people have reported the right tail shaft bearing has failed either initially or after a few flights. This bearing can also fail in a crash or if you have a tail imbalance so it's a good part to have a spare and are cheap. EXI 500 part # EXI-500-BR040904 or Align Part #MRZ6844ZZ It is a good idea to have some spare 2mm and 2.5mm bolts and nylon locknuts on hand for ANY helicopter build. If you don't find you need them during the build it helps to have them later. There will be some spare screws in the kit but not the longer ones. A spare screw package from the EXI 450 spare parts list may be helpful if you add that to your order. Some sizes I recommend are: 2mm x 6mm 2.5mm x 6mm 2mm x 16mm (You may need this for servos like the deeper Hitecs) 2mm nuts & locnuts 2.5mm nuts & locnuts Folks, to help serve others, once you get yours flying, please post your: Blades, Motor, Pinion, Battery, ESC, BEC, BEC battery (if seperate from flight pack), Cyclic servo, Tail servo, gyro and any mods you needed to do. This is the problem - I keep looking at a bigger heli and for $229 the EXI 500 looks good but then you need ALL the other stuff!
I am thinking of either going for it and getting a Trex 600ESP with all the expensive stuff...............or.........I have bought a few pieces from R2Hobbies recently and they deliver just fine and when I had a question they responded within 24 hours - no problems! Howsabout this: Exi 500 $229 HY400 Gyro $15 4 x Turborix Servos $60 Turborix 60A ESC $37 Turborix 2.4 TX/RX $40 Turborix RC500 Motor $37 2 x 11.1, 2200mah, 25C $76 That's a total of $494............plus some shipping and a few spares so an easy $600 You can go to flying hobby and get a trex 500 (not ESP) for $600 that includes better electronics than I listed above plus $60 for the same 2.4 radio gear! What to do?? The EXI 500 does not make sense I am sorry to say. |
