Is constantan resistance wire suitable for hot wire cutting ?

Hi,

Maplins sell a reel of 28 swg Constantan (aprox 55 % Cu, 45% Ni)
resistance wire (approx 4.2 ohm / m) for a fiver which compares favourably
with the 18 os so that SMC were asking for heavyweight laystrate. Has
anyone used this stuff for hot wire cutting of polystyrene foam ? I also
looked at stainless steel fishing trace but the stuff in my local angling
shop is multistrand with the strands only being held together by the plastic
coating, they are not soldered together like laystrate.

Any other suggestions (please include possible suppliers not RS or Farnell)?

Thanks,

I have heard that guitar strings work for your purpose. It may be worth a try
as it is very inexpensive.

Go to the airport, find an aircraft repair shop, and ask for a
few feet of .020" stainless safety wire. Works perfect. If it isn't
nice and straight, clamp one end in the vise, grab the other with
pliers and pull hard; it will come out arrow-straight.
An aircraft parts supplier will sell the stuff in one-pound
spools, not terribly expensive, and that much would keep the whole
club supplied for ten years. Look in the yellow pages under aircraft
parts and repairing.
