*********Post your Sky Painting**********

I have been night flying for a while now I have a Slow Stick plane set up for night flight and a Blade CX2 helicopter set up for night flight. However tonight was the first time I tryed Sky Painting. It was fun being both the photographer and the pilot, so I thought I would post my experience here. Hopefully others will give it a shot, or, if you already have done it, post some of your Sky Painting here.

Tonight I just flew my Blade CX2 in the back yard.
I took the pictures with my Nikon D70 on a tripod in manual mode. After I had all my camera settings, I would then set the camera shutter on timer mode. That gave me enough time to then pick up my RC transmitter and take off and when the camera timer finished it would take the picture.

Even though it looks light in these pictures (except for the one I edited) in was actually very dark. The camera just picks up all the light over the long exposure time. I am going to experiment with my setting to try to get different results. Some light some dark. Any advice is welcome.

I posted all the camera settings in the caption for each picture.

Next time I go out I will use my wide angle lens and fly my Slow Stick at a local park. Should be funů

If you post some pictures, post your camera settings so we can not only enjoy the pictures, but also learn how to achieve similar results.

A shot taken of a night flight with a Katana MD all lit up. A professional photographer took some pics of some of my flights at Joe Nall and supposedly they will be in the new RCU magazine under RC Art.

Some great pictures guys. Makes me want to get out and take some with my Slow Stick.
It has been very fogy at night lately, so I will have to wait.

Daniel, your digital camera might work if you can hold the shutter open for at least a few seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the longer the trail. In the first pic below, shutter was open for 23 seconds, and 70.4 seconds in the second one. In addition to the long shutter times, it's also helpful to be able to manually set aperture as well as ISO (sensitivity to light). Check your camera owner's manual to see if you are able to set any of these settings manually. Also, I always shoot these sky painting pics with the camera on a tripod.

Thanks For the help It appears as though i will be able too, as all those settings are changeable, But the batteries went flat in the camera while i was fiddling, Ill have to have a go with it tomoro And as for the Tripod, I had sort of figured because if i didn't use one, the whole photo would be blury wouldn't it?
