I have some 7 foot fairy lights on the way, will be a while until I can try to work out those 30 foot tails some of the videos show.
Looking through this thread again I need to figure out inventory if I'm going to try one of these. Might try fiberglass rods instead of carbon fiber, less irritating to cut. What sizes do you recommend overall? I think I saw 2mm and 3mm for various things. If you can post the STLs of the connector pieces I'm pretty sure I can figure out the assembly. |

Well... IF Ripstop or Icarex material is hard to find. Here's a cheaper solution. 3mm Depron on the Alpha Kite.
Carefully trace the inside of frame to depron and secure with surgical tape. No glue required. All surface including vertical tail can be from 3mm depron. A tad heavier than ripstop, but still a solution to build this.. |

Ken I finished the builds in front of the night kite, I'm gathering pieces now, will be aiming to do a lot of these big slow cruisers at night leading up to September 2022. Will keep you posted.

Need to do a lot of reading of Ken’s old posts for tips on finishing this build, I have the frame built and am about to do the nylon, paint and lights.

Use UHU to glue the covering. Make sure they are put on tight as possible, but don't cause any warp onto the frame.

Well, I read some of your old build log stuff in this thread and was acting on that, so the nylon is tacked down with CA. Doesn’t help that UHU isn’t available in the US, foam tac or Welders would be the closest, maybe E6000, but the airframe is mostly done.
Current debate I have is power and lights. Have been planning to run 2s with a 9” prop and do lighting with single 5mm leds in straws. Most of the leds I see are 12V which will be dimmer under 2s. I could look for 7.4Vleds and feed from the balance tap, I could find 5v leds and feed from rx or a ubec, or I could go to 3s and drop to an 8” prop, which is a hair faster. It’s also funny that finding frosted straws that aren’t bendy straws or biodegradable is harder than I expected. Clear straws I can find, frosted to diffuse a little better are not as common. |

I use Fairy Lights these days. They run off 2xAA which is about 3.0v. Therefore i tap onto the 2S Balance Port evenly 1S for Left Lights and the other for Right Lights, so it would drain your battery evenly.
Back then i often use White LED through coloured plastic straws rather than color LEDs (See Chart for LED & Voltage). So white takes ups to 3.5v which is the approx voltage per 1S. |

Yeah I have fairy lights to hang a tail behind the plane, intent is to put a servo extension connector on it and power through rx. I’ll have to decide how I want to approach the main body lights, the intent is white forward, red abd green to the sides, and orange or similar to the rear.
Edit: and as I continue on this I’ll be interested in some of the other designs and stl files you’re working on, night time flyers that are slow and deliberate are a big focus lately. |

Ken what sort of all up weight are you seeing? I’m just about done with the big design decisions, I think I have my lighting design nailed down, now I have to make powertrain choices.
I have a 24g bluewonder type 1300kv motor, which I can run for days on a 9x4.7 sf on 2s. When I put the motor and hardware on the scale and it’s 29g. Needs only a 10a esc. Also have a suppo 2208 1450kv, which I can run 2s or 3s on. Lots more thrust but when I put the same amount of hardware on the scale that’s 43g. And it needs an 18a esc which is bulkier. I put the airframe, motor/esc, rx, some straws, a bag of leds, a battery, a rough estimate prop. It wasn’t comprehensive,I didn’t add the 7 foot tail lights. But the smaller motor was roughly 7.9 oz, the larger motor with 3s was 9.3 oz. So once again I have a debate. I want to stay as slow as possible. Heck if the front fiberglass has room I could put a 10x3.8sf prop on it on 2s and have 20 oz of thrust with a speed of 20 mph. |
