Is Jack on another plane or the bottom side?
Ha! Sadly, no Samurai Jack on the other side but perhaps a future project. My daughters time is limited and Im just glad she was able to this. My daughter and I used to watch the show when she was young. She jumped at the idea to paint Aku on a plane.

Now shes got skills! Those are great paintings, but I can see my plane hanging on the wall for artwork! Do you top them with lacquer or something for protection? Any idea of weight change?

Great Job and get her to flying!

I use a clear coat called Krylon Fusion. I try to apply it in one or two (light) coats. Krylon has a UV blocker in it. Ive neglected to do so on other planes shes done for me and they faded over time. I didnt weigh my plane before she painted it but Im around 22 grams heavier than a standard build. This being a slope plane, that much weight is really a non issue. I was concerned that I would have to add a lot of weight to the nose to hit the proper CG but I only needed two pennies.

Heres the maiden flight yesterday. She flies just fine I think. You sure can tell orientation in the air lol!

At Joe Nall 2017 one of my customers requested an unpainted kit and he built it at the event and he and his daughter "painted" it with Sharpies. What an awesome job

Very nice! My daughter painted a depron 3D Juka with sharpies too. They can be a great alternative to paint.

Wow! Looks like youll need oven mitts to fly that one! Did your daughter use an airbrush to paint that? What kind of paint did she use?

She used airbrush acrylic paints but applied them with regular paint brushes. Some of the colors were pearlescent like the yellow and orange which really look good in person but dont show up in the photos.

3D Printed Stencils.

Two words that so not belong together in the same sentence, Paul (me) and Paint!!!!

We just don't get on with each other, tried just about every method and medium over the years but it just eludes me so I just always go with real simple stripes and blocks of colour. As I now only model in foam powered by electric I have started using a cheap dual action air brush with a single cylinder compressor attached to a car 5 Litre spare fuel can as a tank and it does work pretty well with standard Acrylic DIY paint.

What also annoys me is cutting stencils, especially letters so I don't bother. I got a 3D printer around a year ago and have had a lot of fun knocking out all sorts of stuff and the latest 'would that work' idea was paint stencils in particular words. I am just doing a 60 cm EPP YAK for the indoor season so thought that I would give it a try. I found a suitable font, AR DESTINE, which looks like stencilled and the letters have no 'islands' (the middle bit in a's and d's etc.) and just used Fusion 360 to write what I wanted and then extruded a 0.5 mm square 'block' around it. Printed in around 15 minutes and it created a nice sharp flexible stencil.

First try was with orange and I didn't use enough magnets to attach the stencil so I got bleed underneath and the edges were too soft due to the light colour. Next try with more magnets and it worked pretty well.

Almost certainly not as gut as professionally cut Mylar ones but for a quick easy fix for someone not talented enough (me) to do a decent job. Next step will be to down-load one of those 'multi-step' stencils and see how easy (or difficult) it is to import the drawings and to create a print from them.

My daughter hand painted my new Alula Trek using regular acrylic paints, some of which were metallic. She paints a great deal of my planes but this one is my favorite so far.
