Build Log

The World Models 1/3 Super Cub.

This thing is ridiculous. It's not exactly scale perfection, but it's a fun sports scale model (I hope).

I'm going to power it with a cheap hobbycity Turnigy-motor on 12S 5000, 6000 or 11000 mAh, whatever it needs to balance.

More info later as I put it together. Oh, and my friend bough a 1/3 J-3 from TWM as well.

I don't plan to make a lot of mods for it. I'll make the vertical stab assembly removeable to make transportation easier. Maybe I'll recover it in sloartex some time. If I do I'll modify The wingtips to make them more scale as well. Now they are flat on the top. I think I'll change the shape of the wing leading edge where it goes through the fuselage to make it look more scale. I have ordered some Dubro 1/3 Cub wheels for it. The stock wheels look skinny and strange.

The construction is incredibly strong and is made from a lot of plywood. I would have used more balsa myself if I wasn't too lazy to build these days, but it's not going to be too heavy. From what I've seen on youtube it's a light flyer. The servos are supposed to be mounted in the tail. I might mount them all farther forward, in the cabin if possible with pull-pull wires, at least the rudder servo.

Putting it together can be done in a couple of nights if it's kept stock, it really is that easy to assemble. All the hinges are installed from the factory and if the manual is accurate they are also pinned.

I have ordered Hyperion Atlas DS20FMD for everything but the rudder and DS20UMD for the rudder. Should be more than adequate with sensible servo arm geometry.

I'll head over to my friend and take some pics of the J-3 when he gets it. The J-3 is the old version with the fixed tail while mine is the new version with the removeable horizontal stabs. The old version has the kit number A186 for the J-3 and A186S for the Super. The new versions are called A186R and A186SR respectively.

I just finished milling out the parts for the motor mount. I'll finish it tomorrow. The side plates are 0.063" 2024-T3 and the thicker pieces are 6 mm 6082-T6 aluminium.

EDIT:
Oops. I made a mistake. I'll have to make new side plates. that's what happens when you come home from work tired and try to use your head.

The J-3 arrived today along with the servos and wires. I have everything I need to finish it now except a 12S ESC, but I can prop it for 10S initially if I don't get a new ESC by the maiden.

As far as we can tell the only difference is the cowling, lack of flaps and longer ailerons on the J3. Since his is the old version the horizontal stabiliser is not removeable, while it is on my Super Cub. There is more room in the SUper cowling of course, both in length and width. The Super Cub has 207 mm of space from the cowling to firewall while the J3 has 190 mm.

Here's the almost finished motor mount. I milled two new side plates and drilled and tapped the bolt holes today. The only thing left is to bend the mounting flanges. I don't have a brake at home so I'll take it to work tomorrow and bend them there.

I was just given a partially built 1/3 Cub and don't know what size motor to use. What's going in yours? Thanks! Now I need to get back to the B36 thread.

I'm going to use the one in the pictures. It's one of these: http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s..._170Kv_/_3250W

I don't know if the constants are accurate, but it should be possible to drive a 23" prop, which is the scale diameter, at 10S or 12S and 2000-3000 W. More than enough power. I have a feeling the plane will fly quite comfortably even with just 1500 W available.
