The OPS engine thread


Hello,

this post does provide some technical info including supplier sources for OPS high performance glow engines and spare parts.

Also known for high quality RC1 FIRE and FISE pattern power, certain OPS engines are well suited for the serious F3S speed freak (looking for >220 mph with an appropriate airframe).

Namely the 10 to 13 cc OPS RIRE engines featuring 5-ports (called Super SPP VAE / FAN / RCB) deliver more than enough power and rpm even non-modified.




However, the usage of continuous strand carbon fiber props is mandatory for these speed engines!

Yeah, yeah. Carbon fiber mandatory props that only a couple of people make and won't sell. That's why these engines are sitting in a box on a shelf (and I have the venturi's, one just has an RC carb in it for a pic).

I have a couple marine OPS .45 I'm going to convert to airplane use. The pistons and liners are junk so I'll make some new ones for diesel.

Below we can see a quite exotic OPS engine:


The OPS .60 Super SPP RCA VL


The reed valve intake system of this engine allows about 12000 rpm maximum. In combination with an – in this case – low timed liner that engine is perfectly suited for the famous 60. sized pattern planes of the 80's for instance.

So this RCA VL engine comes with plenty of low-end torque!

Unlike its high timed 5-port OPS .60 goldhead RIRE disc or drum valve brothers this VL engine isn't intended for speed planes at all.

There was also a helicopter-edition identical to the RCA VL except for a longer heli-typical crankshaft.

This is my lone OPS, and RC .60, I used to have a 1.20 fourstroke and a 30 MAXI but sold those. It is a fine smooth running engine.

Hello, Does anyone know how many horse power the OPS 60 RC engine of the 1980's puts out? I need to know what RPM the engine will achieve on say a 12/6 prop. Regards Tony

A buddy of mine has an OPS 5L in his boat(a .21). DO you guys know where he can find parts for this engine? The crankshaft snapped right infront of the rear bearing.

Or anyone have one of these motors they wouldnt mind us taking off your hands?

many of your questions can be answered after using the links of post #1 (OPS parts suppliers, useable prop sizes etc).


In future it would be nice to post pictures your OPS engine(s) here while asking.

We will then be able to identify the exact version of that specific OPS engine

I have experience with the big OPS Maxi twin if anyone is interested. I know it's not for F3S, but it did make my models go pretty fast. I saw a lot of poor info when I just ran a search. People saying a G62 has more power. I think not. It has a 5 port cylinder unlike just about any other large motor. Get enough fuel in it and it can really go.

I just picked up an OPS 60 Marine motor and I am wondering what type of fuel I should be running in terms of nitro content etc and the glow plug number.

Hello,

generally all OPS engines starting from 6.5 cc capacity and bigger should be running at 20% of oil minimum. The OPS .80 (13 cc) and OPS .90 (15 cc) engines with at least 22% of oil for better internal cooling.

However if you have one of the needle bearing conrod versions (lower conrod end), then you can reduce the oil content to about 15%.



The nitro percentage mainly depends on the head button volume. Many OPS marine engines do come with either a "standard" or a "nitro" head button. The latter comes with a larger volume allowing for increased nitro content up to 40 %.

So it would be helpful to post a picture here of your OPS marine engine and also of the head button's bottom side...



As for the glow plug choice you can't go wrong with Rossi R8 or K&B HD high performance glow plugs.

This brand-new OPS 90 “BIMETAL“ engine basically is a bored-out OPS .80 (5+2 ports). It comes with additional tungsten weights implemented into the counter-weight of the crankshaft. The familiar needle-bearing conrod of the OPS .67 and .80 has been taken over as well as the drum valve induction unit.
