Why is there no beginner thread/sticky?

Perusing this forum dreaming about entering the world of silent flight I have been bombarded by so many unfamiliar terms: rotors, dead lift zones, spoilers etc...not to mention the different types of 'gliding' -TD, SLOPING, HLG, DLG , SCALE, THERMALS, DYNAMIC SOARING, WOODIES, MOULDIES, FOAMIES to quote from a thread.

Obviously there are some really switched on people here, so how about sharing some of that knowledge and posting a sticky with info to help people get started?

Get a cheap glider and radio and teach yourself how to fly it. Discover the whole thing for yourself, it's more fun that way.

Or do it "by the book", find someone who is experienced, join a club, blah blah.

Either way will work. It's all in fun. Taking things too seriously in the beginning can make it seem as though you're going to work.

If you know someone else that "wants to get into it" partner up and share the adventure. Pretend you're inventing the sport of RC soaring. If you go this route get a 2.4 ghz radio so you don't accidently shoot someone down.

There's 40 ways of getting there. Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

so why not try starting one?

Actually, you'll find most folks are very helpful in answering beginners questions. You'll get more mileage on the individual forums though eg. slope, thermal, DS than on this one. Slope has an excellent "everything" sticky thread. Decide what takes your fancy, post up a couple of "newbie" questions - see what responses you get.

Hey evo,

What is it about soaring that interests you? I've been flying for only a year now and am totally hooked. I fly for me. To slingshot my plane into the sky and soar with the birds is a humbling experience for me every time. It's like reaching up to touch the hand of God. I have never posted a question that has gone unanswered. Don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks for the replies, some helpful, some not quite so.....

I guess my question stems from looking at the CMPro Ventus and thinking "that looks cool, I wonder if I could throw that at the park and trip out a few of my electric parkfliers buddies and their Easy Stars". So I did a bit of spot reading around and figure that there are specific 'horses for courses', right? I just am having trouble matching it all up.

Instead of looking over all over the forums I was hoping people could start posting the info you need to know at the beginning in one place to make it easier to get into soaring. The Sailplane forum seemed the most logical to me as the other forums seemed to be a bit more specialized.

I have the Ventus and it is not easy to fly. It looks cool but it will bite you in the rear quickly.

The nice thing about it is its soo cheep and if it goes in there is not the economic trauma. You need to get a easyglider either slope or electric. You should beat it to death in about one month but you will learn much quicker.

dwells,

I just think it would be good to step away from the 3D scene and high watt performance aircraft for a while and try something different.

One of my friends has a farm on top of a hill - near a very popular hang gliding spot and we were almost eye level with a wedge tailed eagle soaring around. Just watching it hanging in the wind, moving around with barely crinkling a feather was awe inspiring.

I reckon I'd like to have something I could try launch off the dunes when the wind is too strong for my electric planes, but not strong enough for me to go sailboarding - in the 8-14 knot range would do nicely. Or it would be cool to float around at the park...I like the idea of doing lazy circles. The Easystar was supposed to do that but it just sounds like a mosquito on steriods, not really conducive to relaxing....

Evo, sounds like a good slope site. There are lots of good planes suitable for both slope and thermal. Do you build?

THE NEW GLIDER PILOT'S HANDBOOK
Second Edition
by Ed Anderson

If you are just getting started in thermal duration gliders in any form, then there are many things you will want to know. The New Glider Pilot's Handbook is here to try and make that easier.

In the first edition of the New Glider Pilot's Handbook, I compiled the resources based on a series of articles I wrote for RCEzine.com. Unfortunately the magazine went under so the info is no longer available. I have rewritten much of the material and posted it in a variety of places around the forums.

This is a compilation of many of those articles and threads. While many of the articles are mine, I have included some excellent work by other authors. Also, I have provided links that go to various forums and locations so the new glider pilot can discover the breadth of on-line resources that are available. The articles are rich with links to other resources as well, so this listing is deceptive. There is much more behind the links than you might expect.

Some of the links go to threads that I started when I had a question. I felt the content of those threads was helpful, so I have included them here as resources. Have you ever sat in a class hopeful that someone else will ask the question that you don't want to ask? Well, I asked for you. Take a look at the responses.

I invite other pilots to contribute to the thread to expand and supplement what I have compiled here. I invite those with questions to post them in this thread or one of the threads referenced below. The only dumb question is the one you don't ask.

To new and experienced flyers alike, I hope you find something here that will be useful and will contribute to your soaring experience.

Woah,

Ed, that is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks a bunch mate. Make sure you swing by the Aussie BBQ every now and then to say G'day.

Dwells,

After finally finishing my 51"ws scratch built Tiger Moth I thought I'd be finished with building for a while..... That lasted a week before I started thinking "hmmmmm, you know I wouldn't mind having a crack at...."
