Hangar 9 Ultra Stick 40

OK, a friend of a friend had some "rc plane" gathering dust in the attic and asked me if I wanted to take it, because it was probably going to end up in the garbage....

Well, I couldn't resist, so I went and stopped by and was given this..... an unflown, assembled Hangar 9 Ultra Stick! It also included a Thunder Tiger 40 engine, receiver and most importantly...5 servos.

The tail surfaces were broken off, but a little 5 minute epoxy and TLC and now this bird is ready.

I am selling all the gasser stuff and going to electrify the bird. I normally fly much smaller, faster planes, but hey, this should be a fun project and it looks like these Ultra Sticks are fully aerobatic.

I have already ordered a big Suppo outrunner for her as well as a Suppo 70 amp ESC from Light Flight RC. Great service from Light Flight RC and GREAT prices....free shipping on $75.00 or more orders.

Here are the specs on the motor and ESC:

319g Outrunner
Kv: 640, Rm: 0.015, io: 3.2A, Poles: 14
Max efficiency: 25 - 50A
Max amps: 70A for 60sec
Shaft is 6mm
Dimensions: 50mm x 45mm
New "U" Version

SP 70 Amp ESC

Compact 70 amp Brushless ESC
70 amps continuous, 85 amps burst
55mm x 35mm x 8mm, 60g plus 3g bullets
Handles 4-8 LiPo cells
Programmable LiPo or NiMh cutoff
Programmable brake
Low resistance

55 amp Max 6S-7S
40 amp Max on 8S

Programmable features include:
- Brake on, off, soft, medium, hard
- LiPo cutoff 4S-8S
- Auto NiMh (0.8V per cell)
- Throttle setting: auto or 1.1ms to 1.8ms
- Soft or hard start
- Reversible
- Soft or hard cutoff
- Timing 1/7/15/30
- PWM 8KHz or 16KHz

I figure I will prop it for 900-950 watts on a 4S, 4200mah lipo pack. Should give 8-10 minutes of mixed flying.

More to come!

You will really like it, Those 40 "stick" type planes are a lot of fun with close to 1kw on tap.

You may need a taller landing gear

Yes, you are right .... I just picked up a 13 x 10 and a 14 x 8.5 prop to try out on it. The 13 in. prop may have JUST enough ground clearance, but I definitely will need to get more ground clearance for the 14 incher.

I have already put 3" wheels on it, but it needs more clearance. I was thinking about bending the landing gear in to help out. Any other ideas?

Got the electrified Ultra Stick 40 maidened today...... it flew great! A really nice flyer at 900 watts with 9 1/2 minute flight times. Relaxing to fly, but responsive when needed with great control authority at slow and fast flight speeds.

With the 13 x 10 prop it had good vertical....unlimited on fresh batts. close to unlimited on 50% batts. The excellent balance of climbing power and top speed makes me think this prop will be the best for general sport flying. I did have to put the ESC in high timing mode to get it up to 900 watts, but it doesn't seem to have any issues on that setting.
