F-104 Quickbuild

Here is a F104 that I have been working on for a few weeks. Test flight was this morning and it was successful enough I think that I can let the plans out for people to play with. It took a little to get to the success part. The test flight was crazy. It was not like anything that I expected. I thought it would be twitchy in the roll axis but it is rock solid there. I was way off in guessing the CG. I put it at the leading edge of the wingtip. Steve gave me a hand launch and it was crazy from there. Nose straight up climb and totally out of control. I got it up about 100 feet and fed in all the down trim and that didn't help. After hanging on the prop for about 30 seconds I throttled back and things got worst. I ended up behind everyone about 5 feet off the deck inverted, I rolled it around just as I flew into the sun and dumped it at that point. Landed hard but level and all was OK. The prop was running when I landed so I ended up spinning the prop nut off and loosing it. I installed a new nut and moved the CG forward. Steve launched again and it was night and day, smooth and controllable. I landed and adjusted again and all is good. Fast with a very fast but smooth roll rate. I need to explore the stall some more as it seems to be very deep when you get there, maybe play with the CG some more. Overall it seems very flyable. Landings are a surprise as well, slow with good flare authority. So, three flights made and coming home in one piece. On Friday I'll run it through some more tests. I have it setup with flaperons so I'd like to see how they work although I really don't need to slow it down anymore for landing.

Wingspan 18 3/8 inches.
Length 43 inches
Motor Scorpion HK 2208-28
Prop 4.5 x 4.1
Battery used 1000 and 1300 X-caliber 3 cell
Material 6 mm depron

Edit: Added the tiled plans for download. Thanks Pat for the tiling the plans.

Excellent. I've sometimes wondered if this plane might be differcult to make fly due to short wings, but obviously this is not the case.

Thanks everyone. I tend to get lazy with paint and such especially if I'm not sure the plane will fly the way I like. I think it's time to search the web and find a good color scheme.

The weight ready to fly without battery is 7.1oz. We'll see how much that goes up with color.

More flights today but not much in the way of photos. It likes big wide turns, loops were surprisingly tight though. I wanted to play with slow flight but for some reason my motor kept cutting out at the worst times. I dropped full flaps one time and she would come down at about a 45 degree angle but it was controllable. Just as I advanced the throttle it cut out. I tried to get it to run again but no go. Not the best glide with the tiny wing but I got her down but with minor damage to the tail. A little ca and I was back in business for another flight. I hope I can keep her flying so i can explore the flying characteristics more. So far it's been fun and a attention grabber.

Thanks for the kind words.

3 servos, the elevator servo is behind the motor with an extension for the servo leads around the prop.

KV is 3125

Looks like another winner! Are you going to be out Friday at Nichols (day after Thanksgiving?), or the Wingnutz field on Saturday? I really want to see this thing in person!
