SPE .43 Repais

I just bought a used edge 540 with the SPE .43 in it. It had been sitting for a while. We got it running great then shut it down, the crank shaft now has a wobble. Likely a bearing or cracked piston rod. Does anybody repair or sell parts for these things?

looks like you're in SoCal given your are code. There are a couple pilots, "Robert Petrosian" and "Alex Zayika that hangs out once in awhile at the Apollo Field. They both have had experience in repairing this engine. From the sound of it, it is most likely a bent shaft.

There is a couple shops that fix these engines as well (not local), but online.

Anything that fits the Zenoah G26 should fit the SPE26. And if you're at it already do yourself a favour and replace the Walbro carb on that engine, it comes with a 9.5mm Venturi (24/64) and if you fit a larger dia. carby (32/64 = 12.7mm is ideal) you can easily transform it from 'gutless' to 'acceptable'.

From playing around with my G23 and G26 I really like the Walbro WT813 (It says 813A on the carb). Of all the different carb that works the best for me at least on both the G23 and G26. It has an accelerator pump and that makes the throttle transition so much better. No hesitation compare to the stock WT643.

Yes, that's a great carb with a12.7mm Venturi, obviously been upgraded already some time ago.

A couple of things...

1. people comment without reading..., because Walbro carb is standard with this engine. So don't be stupid and start replacing carb for the sake of replacing.

2. Walbro make a variety of carb. I would not go and use the one that another 26 or similar size uses, just because they are Walbro. The Walbro carb that comes with it is an excellent carb. Specifically picked out for this particular engine.

3. The weakness of the engine is not from the engine, but from the ignition system. There are plenty of different after market companies that make replacements. You just need to know which market that your engine was originally was made for (octane level), so that the ignition was designed around. If you don't know know, you can ask someone who does know and readjust and figure out the proper sensor and ignition location.

do not invest too much $ into the engine. The later version has a much better internal counter balance.

keep an eye for hairline crack on the engine mount and the prop hub. The QC on that engine varied greatly. The MFG eventually moved on to a new designed, named MLD. The MLD series was a far better designed engine. In my personal opinion, years ahead of the DLE series. The MLD was also capable of accepting minor adjustment to up the performance... it is neither here nor there.

I would not get the MLD engine now, unless you have access to parts.
