Slip the surly bonds...
Sopwith Mike's Avatar
My DH 86 Express from Ivan's plan has now had its markings applied and some flights in superb afternoon sunshine at Strawberry Field. The usual problem of looking straight into the sun was solved by standing on the far side of the field and flying over the pits area - no-one else was there!

The markings are by Tim of Model Marking fame and at last bring the model to life. The flight characteristics remain excellent (she will take off with no control inputs except throttle) and her landings are flatteringly good. I suppose with two 100" glider wings I should not be surprised. The fuselage side area is considerable and I'm sure she would knife-edge if anyone was brave enough to try.

The motors are annoyingly noisy and one in particular seems out of phase and may even have a bent shaft. Perhaps I should have made the cowls detachable after all!

Beautiful plane. The lines on the wings are just gorgeous. Great effort.

Today, Trevor and I managed to fly the two DH biplanes together in a ragged sort of follow my leader. It was marvellous! It's difficult as a pilot to appreciate the spectacle, but the response from fellow fliers at Strawberry Field was unanimous. Unfortunately the video was not so good but we have a plan for next time.

A few minutes later Malcolm flew his DHC Chipmunk, completing a trio of Ivan's designs.

Here's the video - don't expect too much!

Hi folks.

Sorry it has been so long, some nice machines build while I have been absent.

Main reason for my bowing out of the scene was the loss of our airfield to quarrying. Still to be resolved.
Shell is going to be having a new build log cabin in the garden which necessitated moving Roberts (pentaxmanjnr) shed / workshop.
He now is mobile of his own accord, with job and female companion so planes have disappeared off his radar for now.

This means his shed is now free for me to use as a building place so I will be picking up his Twin Otter build as well as completeing my own Beaufighter. Stress is striking again which is the thing that bought me back to the RC hobby of my childhood previously, so hopefully the building will help as well as adding some more planes to the hanger in the loft - which may well require extending at this rate.

Look faorwards to seeing you al again soon.

Fond Regards,

Andy (Pentaxman)

Good to have you back (and great to see you briefly over the summer too). Building (planes or log cabins) is a great stress-reliever!

Great to have you back Andy, as you were the UK original Ivan builder.

Here's my Mossie, still running nicely. I know it's one of your favorite Ivan planes Andy,,

This is a picture of what they looked like AFTER the outing.

Lucky you! I got the Express in the air earlier in the week, but the air was very bumpy.

Not an Ivan's model, but one from another exponent of lightweight electric-powered models, the late Peter Rake. The Pup was built as part of the memorial build-off run by Steve85. She weighs just under 1lb and floats around really nicely at 36" span.
