Firefly Mount


This worked really well. Add a washer or two to adjust thrust angle.

Nice mod Rick!

Weighing in on the spar question: it depends on the foam used. I found epp to be too floppy without spars for my taste and wind conditions I fly in. With stiffer foams or different batches of epp your mileage may vary.

I have found that a composite build can have the best of both worlds. I've built foamies like this with an EPP "core" and used fan fold polystyrene for the KF layers.

The fan fold is stiffer but more prone to break in response to "pilot error".

The EPP is more forgiving, but floppier.

The two TOGETHER give me a structure that is both stiff and impact resistant.

Fiberglass tape on the leading edge also helps to stiffen the structure, and protects the LE's....

Rick, what it the lower plate made out of?

That's a GREAT way to mount and have the thrust angle adjustable.

Thin sheet of bass wood. Light ply would work. I glued the plate to the foam which distributes the force. I used two 3mm socket head black screws and then the black strip determined the color.

If I was to paint a different color I might pick up some fusion (plastic) paint or testors paint and paint the mount first. I picked up the mount at HURC

I souped up my firefly - I've mounted a funfighter motor. Tried it today ith a 4s 1000 mah nanotech lipo.

It works! But boy is it loud. Like REALLY loud. But great fun though!

Firefly scratchbuilt rc plane with 4 cell lipo battery and funfighter motor (1 min 22 sec)

]I built a 16" FF with foamboard. I used carbon fiber for a spar and bamboo skewers for supporting the tail. I used elevon and ruddder. I didn't like the flexing of the tail .I probably have it overpowerd. 31 oz thrust with a hand wound E Max 2208. 54 grams. I just finished winding a MP JET with 20 oz thrust at 34grams. That might work but I gave MY FF to a friend thad has a lighter power set up. will see how it flies before I attempt another. I flew FLYGUY RICKS and it flew pretty good but I don' like any expos in my plane .(personal pref)His adjustable mount is interesting.He turned me on to a " CHEAP N EASY" and I put in one of my E/MAX specials and did a destruct test video. this was a blast to do.

Looking at where the battery is and the size I would venture it is tail heavy and heavy and they don't fly well like that, not at all!!! C/G needs to be atleast 8.5" from the nose. Do you have the doubler on the bottom, that also effects the airfoil.

Bentoad states that his FireFly is a 16" span. The cg has to be adjusted proportionately. 16/24 x 8.5 = 5.7 inches from the nose.

Swap the Rx and battery positions and itmight be pretty close.

I't ask the new owner what size the Firefly was.

In Bentoad's post #2842 he states a 16" FF.

I think he made the 24" but with no kf on the bottom. Not sure of the length but he told me this AM about the KF.
