House Of Balsa School yard series, Extra 300XL EP Conversion
Hello Guys,
I'm converting a House Of Balsa 300XL fun fly. The kit itself is your traditional house of balsa's signature, where patial parts are laser cut and other are stamped, but the over all kit is 100% perfect for my taste and style of building. |

The wings construction is quite easy, nicely laser cut sheet of balsa, but the only problem that I have found so far, this plane would be on the heavy side.
The Ribs are 1/8 balsa, the spars are 1/4x1/8" and it also consist of hard wood, the same size as the spars. As well, as 1/8 dowels. So this wing will be on the heavy side. I'm looking for ways to lighten the wings a bit, I will probably substitute the maple dowels with 1/8 fiber tubes to cut off some weight as much as possible. |

The Dowel is Mapel 1/8" dowel leading edge, as well, as inserts. Servo trails and supports consist of 1/8x14" harwood. 1/4x18" balsa spar caps and spacers.

Getting the motor to fit in place, I basically just eye balled the best fit.
Motor mount. 1/4 sq" another weight factor. |

Test to fit, but try to push the motor in more, just in case if the weight poses a problem, I might just use a GB with this conversion.

My overall impression with this plane. "This plane is going to be a challenge" I love it

Ever since building this kit but with .09 Glow power, I've thought about converting it to electric. It's a great little plane and if built light enough should fly absolutely wonderful. BTW! You can get rid of a lot of weight in the wing by getting rid of the hard wood dowels and substituting them with balsa. This plane in its out of the box form is way over built and could stand to lose a lot weight. The body can also go on a diet and will not become too weak that it won't hold up... Try cutting some circle holes out of the fuse as well as the tail feathers...
Here is a pic of mine: Good luck and keep the pics coming... Jeff |

OCMODELS,
I think, I have some idea's on how to make her lighter. Check this out, and tell me what you think? 1) CF rods, replacing the Dowels. This plane,s weight will not be in the fuse, but in her wings 85% of it. 2) More lighting holes in the ribs. They are thick anyways, right? 3) lighting holes on the tail. and on the fuse.*Holes, will be 1/4" gap from the frame and each other. Red, is where I am going to mount the battery, holes on the side of fuse |

The CF rod would work great and will save some weight. I lightened the fuse on mine quite a bit and took some what the same amount out as shown in the pic below other than the battery spot. You will certainly want to keep the battery above the CG of the plane so you won't add too much weight fore or aft of the CG. The ESC and reciever can fit in the wing with the servos no problem... The motor will weigh less than the glow version would have so you can keeo the battery a bit forward to offset this but if you go with a gearbox and larger prop you will want some room to move the battery pack back a bit...

Try CST in Tehachape for CF needs - rods, tube, fabric, etc.

Someone else showed me this, decent prices:
http://www.citystar.com/hang-em-high/ushop/ I would like to build this plane (gas ver) to play with but I'm not into covering planes (I'm atleast the worst!) |

Thank guys,
I'm going to look into it. I guess this conversion will have to wait, until I get my hands on CF rods I will keep you guys posted. As I was looking at it this morning, This bird is not as bad, as I thought it was, the night before. I actually like it, and it has lot's of room. Conversion on this bird is possible. No doubt, she a winner but then again to early for me to judge her. |
