Greetings.

Ditto on the Kudos.

Question: Can you do a similar plug-making tutorial?

I'm mostly curious about how the plug is finished. Can it be carved from blue foam and then glassed? Will an epoxy finish stand up to the heat from the plastic? How did you make those nifty raised frames? How tidy does everything need to be? Will dust on the surfaces show up on the finished canopy?

You've whetted our appetities - now we want the second course!

Ciao.

I've been using similar technique for a long time. Your setup looks alot more polished but the technique is as described.

One note, you dont' need a fancy plastic holder. I just taped the plastic sheet to a frame with 'zagi' tape. Make sure the tape make contact with the plastic and frame all around the edges.

Also, leaving sheet in the oven a bit too long causes a big mess.

I was using styrene based plastic sheets and the smell got real old real fast. Of course I was doing parts for kits so the volumes were high.

At one point I went looking for an old oven for the garage to get the smell out of the house. It didn't happen and now I don't have a garage. So my solution was to stop offering the parts in the kits.

Very helpful how-to Dan. What kind of plastics are best for vac-forming? Are some better than others? I think I used styrene in the past. I would also like to see a mold how-to done sometime.

It's not going to build itself

Nice frame, I didn't think to use wood, the temps aren't that high after all.
Thanks for posting,

Hey you're wasting plastic! You can easily get 2 F-80 canopies on the same pull.

Thanks ,Reed.

DCS-
The plug needs to be very clean (glass like) The raised window frames are pin striping tape and then painted over, cool ha.

Canuck,
The plastic I use is called PEPG .040 I got it at S&W plastic in riverside Cal.
no smell or fumes.

Dave
Have plug will pull but the p-51 plug is M.I.A.

I wasn't doing canopies, but will try anything other than styrene the next time I find a need for vac formed parts.

.040 sounds pretty thick. I guess it will make strong canopies.

Is it PEPG or PETG? I've tried PETG but have not been able to get very good results. A lot of small pits on the inside of the plastic. What do you coat your plug with?

You're a genius!

More questions:

1. What kind of paint?

2. Anything on top of the paint? Clear coat? Wax?

3. The paint doesn't transfer to the heated plastic?

Thanks for sharing your great techniques and for your patience with all these questions.

Dan I meant the P-51 canopy Carl was finishing from what Doug did. No biggie. I can wait. It is fun to see how it is done. You do amazing work.
