Spirit Of Yesteryear Kits May Live On !!!
I have some rather unfortunate news I thought should be shared with the modeling community and felt it most appropriate in the Vintage and Old Time forums due to the subject of the company. This may be old news, however it caught me by total suprise.
I recently contacted Dare Designs, out of Cumberland Maryland, with interest in purchasing one of The Spirit of Yesteryear kits they distribute only to learn that my selection was limited to 1 of the 2 Playboy kits left in stock. The unfortunate news was being told that Stuart, owner of Spirit of Yesteryear, passed away unexpectedly. I was also told that there was no interest within the family or friends to keep the company alive.
On a more positive note I was also told the Dare Designs is very serious and optimistic about purchasing the rights to manufacture the more popular Yesteryear designs and that project is currently in the works.
My deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Stuart. His contributions to the hobby were greatly appreciated.
Let the Spirit live on!!!
I just saw this post of yours for the first time today. thank you for the kind words about my very old friend Stuart! He was a character, and we spent more than a few good times talking airplanes... building airplanes.. (okay... I built.. he directed! LOL) and flying! I still have one of the original prototypes of the Airborne, and it is STILL in flying.. (read uncrashed) condition. In fact, it just made the trip across the Atlantic to Scotland (securely wrapped in bubble wrap and packed in a container with several hangar mates). Dead calm and sunny here today.... and I haven't got her back together yet.. in fact.. can't remember which box the landing gear is packed in!! But.. after a little repair (might recover the fuselage as after 30 years, it's looking a bit tired.....) She will fly on days like today!
I also acquired a set of plans for the plane from Dare a few years ago as my original set has looong disappeared!
This little blue baby hung from the ceiling of Stuarts shop in Barrie for quite some time, and just before he passed away, I took it home, and brought it up to modern standards, with tiny lightweight servos and a dime sized speed controller and Lemon receiver.
Coupled with a lighter Lipo battery, and lightweight foam wheels, she shed about four ounces!!!
My tribute to Stuart is to continue to fly the little beast as long as possible!
