Gravity? No, the Earth sucks

today Eckace and I were flying our radians -and he had crashed his easystar already and we didnt know why it had lost control- we thought rx had failed as it was unresponsive after the crash- but while flying the radians- he was flying away from us toward the edge of the field- and he lost all control again- the radian was flying just fine on it's own headed for residential area -
and Bob exclaims-
" my TX lost all power- the screen is blank"-
I yelled- "hit it !" -
So he smacks it and the screen came back on and he managed to get the plane turned around and landed quickly- We then discovered a battery connection problem - whew a close call - that radian was on its way to gonesville !!!
but it was too late for the smashed Easystar

What kind of radio was it? It must be great to fly with a buddy who you can count on when things go down. What was it that possessed you to say "Hit it?" That would never occur to me, but I have had signal loss problems with the Mustang and maybe next time I might have the presence of mind to try that.

With a little practice in an open area where you are safe you can learn to circle down in an area that size and land if in relatively still air. Pick up the low wing just before touching down.
A circular approach instead of the usual long straight in one.

I agree, practice a "spoiled approach".

Spoilers were a "must" until I improved my flying skills and I no longer have any desire to install them.

Spoilers are installed in the upper surface of the wing designed upon deployment to "spoil" lift.

Flaps are installed on the trailing edge of the wing to increase lift. Flaps that pivot upward do little to decrease lift.

Some aircraft combine flap and airleron deployment to serve as brakes...

Thanks for the tips on short landings. I like the net idea, but I'm going to start practicing the circular approach at the club field. Might need a combination of the two for my yard.

It was a hitec optic 6- 72mgz
Nothing wrong with radio- just the new batt pack we installed

if thay would have happened on my optic 6 2.4ghz- it never would have linked back up- and bye bye birdie....

Spoilers in the top of the wing. They would be great for spot landing and also as a way to get the Radian down from a thermal when its higher than your comfortable with.
Twice this season I've whished I had em'...the last time I spirialled down from 2200 feet I ended up putting a lot of stress on the rudder pushrod and the metal clip pulled out from the fuse.
Keep in mind my Radian is 4 years old and needed a tune up anyway!

I ended up doing all the Paul Naton mods (http://glidefast.typepad.com/glidefa...-ups.html#more)
and adding some new HS65HB servos.

I like the way the birds twist their tails to get rudder action. I wonder if anybody has tried designing a plane that works that way. Maybe it would be more efficient than an elevator-rudder combination.
