Ditto on both. I think 3D printing works best when added as a new option for building fiddly/awkward things. And for printing disposable parts where high failure rates are inevitable. We did a 3D Labprint P-38, and I love it to bits, but I'd be a whole lot more confident throwing it around if it had been designed around a CF spar! Depron is an amazingly light and strong material and I'm sure it's the high power:weight and low wingloading that makes a Polaris so epic. A heavy tail is going to be a problem I think. Have you considered designing the tail section to mate to a Depron fuze and wing? And are you doing an all flying horizontal stab on a CF tube? 3D printing could make that a drop in and play option with the pivot tube, servo mount, wire conduits and fin all in one...

And don't forget PLA isn't really waterproof without a sealer. At least not in our experience.

Sorry for my late reply, came just back from hospital with six more screws- not forseen in the original plan -in the spline...

Well, mixing the flexing depron with stiff ABS is not what I am really considering. It would be no problem at all to design a coupler to do so, but I doubt it will be useful.
The PLAris is not designed for water any more, grass and snow operation only. Being four days in hospital I had enough time to investigate in resin. I think this could be the solution, the only question is how thin the walls could be practically printed. If skin could be printed in 0.25 to 0.3 mm and internal web in 0.4 mm the challenge is won.
Any other property of resin is better than PLA. (Glueing , temperatur, unidirectional strength, density ....)

NorthStar and 'family' photo


A NorthStar flying recently at our lake. The owner-pilot originally built this in the early 90s.
At the end of the video I have a 'family' photo of this plane alongside a Polaris, Dragonfly and Skipper.

Is it possible to use motor 1806 and battery 3S 1000 on Polaris? Or i will have issue with CG?

That depends on whether the 1806 is can size or stator size ... if its can size - its a long way of the size needed. It also depends on KV and prop used ... What BRAND is the 1806 so we can see what its real size is ? What KV is it ? What prop are you thinking to use ?

An 1806 stator motor is a 2316 can size motor and IMHO not enough for the job. The Racerstar 1806 2280kv on 6x4 only gives 460gr thrust and 120W.

The standard motor for Polaris is the 2826 (can size) 2200kv motor with a 6x4E prop. This usually results in over 800gr thrust and about 270W. This combo gives good performance but drop back to 5x4 or 6x3 and you will struggle ...

In stator size .. a 2826 can motor is about 2212.

As regards the 3S 1000 ... many people fly a 1300 so a 1000 is just a matter of getting it far enough forward ... and if you are going to use a smaller motor - that will help as the rear weight will be less.

My honest opinion is to go with a larger motor, as struggling with a small low power setup only disappoints and its such a great model - shame to spoil the fun.

Motor Dys 1806 2300kv, prop Avan 5x6.5 3 blade. thrust I think about 500gr. Searched in the thread, found with such a setup successfully fly on polaris in smaller size.

I assumed you were looking at standard size Polaris ?

If looking at a reduced size Polairis - then of course ... I would think a 75% version should go OK
