Great information Dave and others. Thanks for taking the time to post.

I have also been enjoying these tutorials. The videos that are with the tutorials help reduce some of the complexity.

I just paid $500.00 to buy sketchup last year and when I tried to open your drawing I was informed that I have to have a newer version to open it.

That almost turns me off to the entire program.

Tim, that file was created using SketchUp 7. You're not missing much, it was only a bit of fun. I've attached a SU6 version if you want to have a look. I know it's a PITA having to keep paying for upgrades, but it's pretty much the norm these days unfortunately.

BTW Dave, I don't think i've complimented you on this thread yet...Nice work fella!

That was cute firetrappe.

My complaint with sketchup is that even when greedy microsoft puts out a new "word" program I can still read a document made with it, even if I have an older version.
I can live without all the new gadgets in sketchup version 7, but why can't I at least view the picture with my version 6.XXX?
After spending $500.00 for a program I do not expect to have to spend another $100.00 every year just to be able to use it compatibly with someone who has a newer version.

Problems with the unfold plug-in

Ok, I need some help here. I am designing a Foamy profile model that has a couple of components that are twisted. I am trying to use the [JF] Unfold tool to get them flat for cutting but I am having a bunch of trouble with it. I can't get it to work all of the way across the part and it is crashing Sketchup. The entire thing seems odd so I created a simple cone and tried the tool on it and it worked fine. I am not sure if the problem is with my component, the plug-in (doubtful), or the way I am using it.

I would sure appreciate it if someone with more experiance with the plug-in could have a look at this and give me some advise. I have attached A copy of the suspect component.

Thanks in advance,
Rob...

Rob, I don't have much experience with the unfold plugin, but have a look at the attached file and see if it makes sense. I've flattened the part and tried to explain how I did it.

Hope this helps,
Si.

Here you go. It's best to first erase the tab lines, then select the whole model and go to the soften edges option and drag it all the way to nothing. This shows the faces so you can unfold them.

Oh and I changed the background, that white on white drives me nuts.

I should have known the Phlatprinter guys would jump in and save me. Man I can't believe how sloppy I drew that part. I am a little sick with the flu though. Not a great excuse but hey.

I managed to get it to work for the most part using Si's method. At least I got the parts flat so I could print a plan. I will have to cut them out and see what I come up with.

Thanks for the help guys. Not sure why that was so hard.

I know it was posted some where in here but I can't find it again.

When you use the unfold tool how do you get your part on the horizontal plane, mine are all sitting at odd angles right now.

Put a horizontal sqaure up against your odd angled part, unfold the part to the square, then just erase the square.

This is some of my first work. Please don't laugh.

I'm sure all of you already know this but I had to figure it out.

These are drawn on the free version of Sketchup. To get them in RCG........

To save a file to from Sketchup to RCG.
The Desktop will only record what is on the screen and how it sits on the screen. There are other components you cannot see outside the frames in these posts. I just rotated and centered till I got the look I wanted then .......

File
Export
2D Graphic
Save in Desktop
Export.

To post picture from Desktop to RCG

advanced edit
Download from desktop
upload to RCG
Save picture
