Looks good for a scratch build


Hey

Looks good for a scratch build. The big thing is to take the dive and build. I need to improve on that myself; therefore, I can't criticize ambition.

New pictures of old trusty 40" this time v4.1!
After many hours of fun and bunch of crashes i replaced wing and tail section.
Stab similar to Apogee, fin - shrunken SuperGee. Wing - 0.75oz FG plus 2oz FG reinforcement on LE and over spar. Full T carbon spar. Litle overkill but i need strong, forgiving wing. Tail 5lbs balsa and 0.75 FG. Poad - 2oz FG over 8lbs balsa. Boom - Alegro All in West System resin. Hand made, no vacuum bagging, no molds. Overall weight 160g - 180g TWA 190" I'm inexperienced pilot (I learned to flight and trow on this plane without anybody help!) but i think it's great flayer, very responsive yet stable.

Nice!

You would definitely see a performance improvement it you used ailerons and forgot the rudder.

This way, you could use WAY less dihedral, so you would be getting more of the lift from the wing actually lifting the plane, instead of fighting the lift from the other wing panel.

I dunno about that. Two more servos, an inevitable seam in the wing, extra linkage in the airstream unless you can do one of those direct aileron drivers that small, and the cosine of 12 degrees is 0.978, which seems pretty close to one to me, particularly since this makes it a non-planar wing which may get rid of some of the induced drag. Plus it's easier to fly rudder-elevator smoothly.

I suppose the launches will be somewhat lower without the ability to dial in some reflex, and if you're doing dlg contest tasks the ability to add a lot of drag sometimes would be nice.

If you have ailerons, you wouldn't need a rudder.

So you are only adding one servo.

And your wing dihedral might be 12 degrees, but the total angle between the wings is 156 degrees. (24 degrees total from 180.)
The drag from a pair od aileron linkages would be only slightly more than the drag from your rudder linkage.

Touche! Main point exactly! Plus you cant beat simplicity of R/E and I'm green pilot. Main next build: flaperon, stabulator, fin no ruder. I'm waiting for pair of 3.6g blue arrows servos.

jm... some of the best pilots in america swear by their rudder .... there are other threads on these forums for that question with ALOT more knowledgeable folks chiming in... even mark dreala, the designer of the supergee and apogee, puts in a rudder.. why would he do that? i think he knows a bit more than you do being that he's a MIT professor and you are a high school student??

pyrsly... do a little homework before you decide to go no rudder... you'll find a lot more info that rivals JM's opinion and you can then make your decision from there...

Very Nice Build !!!! My first builds didn't look that good !!!!

Rudder or not is up to you. Rob and I agree to disagree on this subject. I would suggest though to go with a spring and string system. The less weight in the tail on a smaller bird is even more of an issue than on a larger plane.

Keep up the great work. I am especially impressed with your pod build.

Is the pod balsa or composite?

It looks pretty shiny. (could be a good mold or covering...)

Pod: balsa + 2oz FG, covering: 2mil vinyl, just for color and little abrasion protection. Rocky landing sites, like one that I fly, tend to rip glass and mash balsa.

My dad is letting me make a hotwire cutter, so maybe we could set something up...

I could probably hook you up with a couple sets of cores.
