Smart questions


Some questions for you smarty pants types.. Answer with pics if possible, please:
- How do you hook up the elevator (no rudder on this one, I assume)?
- any additional strength needed (kevlar or similar) if you're going to overpower this (F10/8x2000RC zapped, 14.5x14, 500W+)?
- CG?
- I assume set up spoilers?
Related to the servo, I assume when I first hook up the wires, the control horns will pop up out of that hole in the cover?

Did you have to clean up the nose any to get the F7 to fit? Mine seems to have a little epoxy splattered around that needs cleaning up.
You think the rudder is really worthwhile? I'm going to start without..

Did you servo control horns pop up when you wired them up?

Ok, servos are fine.. Will set up spoilers just like my Sirius (in fact, I just copied the program).
Next question - the picture on your site for the V tail shows the balls on the elevator surfaces, the sockets on the rod. How are the balls attached, what kind are they, etc? The photo is fuzzy (focused on the wing/table, not the tail) - do you have a better shot of that setup?
I had to make a 1/4" ply spacer ring for my motor - the F7 pulls right up against the mount, but the Graupner spinner, with it's collett, sticks out about 3/16. By setting the motor back, it's a nice snug fit. I had to sand the nose to match the spinner (the nose was slightly out of round in a few places- this was the same on my Sirius, as it happens).. Motor's in, working on aileron linkages, radio and evelator servo are next and then, well, it's ready to fly! I think I'll run it on a CAM 13x7 for the first flight, with 8x1250. The 15x15 and 14.5x14 on 8x2000RC zapped will fit no problem. I need to shake it out a little first, I guess, and see how it handles..

1.Yes I had to clean up a bit of epoxy. I used a dremel barrel sander, quick and easy.

2. The rudder does add some weight, but makes it climb so much more straight. I'm still unsure if I'd want to change back to one servo. The rudder works superbly, better than I thought a V-tail would work.

3.Yes the control horns popped up. I soldered on a deans four pin plug and paralleled the neg. and pos. leads from the servos. This made a neat, clean, no mistake hookup for the wing.

You'll love this one Andy, have fun! Let us know when you get a flight in. Oh, and don't forget to program in as much UP for the spoilers as you can get.

Greg, do you have a better pic. of the V-tail hookup? I'm still a little confused (as to how you attached the balls to the surfaces)..

Hi Andy, sorry for taking so long.;D The ball joints are just standard 2/56 that have a hole drilled through the side and another tapped hole that I soldered onto the control rod after grinding them down to save a bit of space. The rods were epoxied into the elevator halves after drilling a small hole so that the rod had something more than just epoxy to grab onto. They go in just like an aileron linkage.

Working at times on the V-tail linkages.. waited on a buddy to bring over some 4/40 rod on his CBR929 this afrernoon - it threads right into the ball links I have, so I will use that now.
Took me 3 days from the time I placed the order..

I ordered one about a month ago and I am still waiting. I was hoping to get an idea of how long the wait really is. Every time I call Hobby-lobby they say it's due in any day now.
I hate waiting on things......

Mine was damaged (wing), that's how I got it so soon. The discount was fantastic, the repair was easy, and it's as good as (or better than) new! And I learned how to fix a hollow-moulded wing in the process..

Shelby, don't fret, I ordered one and it took SIX MONTHS to get it! I won't say who I ordered it from but I was patient and checked back every two weeks or so. They usually order a dozen or so at a time but only get a few. It seems the factory is having a hard time keeping up with orders. I must say it was well worth the 6 month wait. I passed the time flying a <a href=http://www.jps.net/cobrajet/Secco.html target=blank>Graupner Secco</a> with Astro FAI 035/4.4-1 and 10 cells. This got me tuned up for the next level needed to fly the <a href=http://www.jps.net/cobrajet/smart/Smart.html target=blank>Smart</a>.
