F4d Skyray - Easybuild (6mmflyrc Quickbuild)

Here are my plans for an easy-build F4D Skyray.

You can purchase this plane in kit form from:- http://www.6mmflyrc.com/quick-build-series.

As you can see I got my inspiration from the excellent 6mmfly quick-build models.

It keeps the simple form of thrust vectoring by having the control surfaces in the prop wash from a mid-mounted motor.

It is built from 6 mm Depron, held together with hot glue. I used Epoxy for the carbon rods and motor mount.

SPECS:-
Wing span = 70cm (27.5”)
Length = 92cm (36”)

MY SETEP:-
AUW (with battery & painted) = 532g
Prop = 6x4
Motor = 2000kv
ESC = 40 Amp
Battery = 2170mAh 3s1p Li-Po
Aileron throw = +/- 20 degrees
Static thrust = 650g

NOTE: I have only built one prototype and then amended the plans. So the pics don't exactly match the plans.

So if you decide to build it please provide feedback on any mistakes or possible enhancements.

Some pics of the prototype build.

Here are some pics of the prototype build.

I originally had a rudder. But during testing I found that it was next to useless and added tail weight. So it is now removed

Kit available

Just wanted everyone to know we are kitting this design and are ready to go. Wingspan is 28" (Like all our "quickbuilds") and this one goes together very easy.

Just a great flying plane. We hear it all the time about our full fuse Skyray, that its just so easy to fly and so stable, and those traits have translated over to this design as well.

Thanks Jim for the pictures!

Pat, We will have it out. I literally slap this thing together the night before these photos were taken. From start to finish was about 2 hours including adding the simple monokote stickers.

Here are a few more photos. We flew 7 packs and had a blast catching it out of the air. All total 6 pilots flew it that day.

Hey Guys,

Glad to see it in the air

Actually i still have the prototype in one piece, even after a few hard landings and a bit of hot glue.

NAC,
It is fun to fly thanks for the design. Speaking of hard landings, Heather was trying to catch it inverted and I ended up landing inverted. I cracked the rudder but a little ca and we were back in business.

We have taken out the mild setup we had in the Skyray after flying yesterday. My son had a motor that he had won at a local funfly. It's basically a Grayson copy. We now have straight up unlimited vertical and lots of speed.

I've been told that people like the tiled plans without the blue gridlines, so here's a Letter version with just the borders.

Pat was able to maiden his Skyray today. Looks like it flew real well. It should look great when he get some color on it. Tina tried to get photos of both Skyrays in the air but the photo op just wasn't there. Maybe next time.

Thanks for posting the pics Jim. And thanks to Tina for taking them!

I flew 3 more packs through it after you guys left. Since I had run out of 2200 packs, I started using my Zippy Rhino 1350 packs shoved up at the very front of the elctronics bay. CG came out spot on. Unlimited vertical with the Grayson Parkjet combo and a 6X4E. Lots of fun!

I now have paint on it, but need to run to the store tomorrow as I ran out of one color and have some touch ups to do. Decals should be on by Christmas.

And a testament to how quickly these go together. Jim said he'd thrown his together in a single night. Well, at about 6pm last night all I had done was the spar was glued in. From 6pm until about 11pm, I got it all together and ready to maiden! These 6mmFlyRC Quick Build kits are awesome!
