USS Defiant - Yet another Summer of Space Design! - With Plans!!!

I had a little time today and whipped this up.

The USS Defiant from Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

It is very cool!!!

I am going to mix all control surfaces so i will have 6 surfaces in the roll axis!!!!

I put the engine almost dead center too. This thing should be a very nice performer.

Wingspan (saucerspan) is about 23", length 31.5"

I am probably going to have to build it out of Pink Foam since i have not found any blue stuff yet. =(

Anyhow. What do you guys think?

Plans Added

Very good, but how about the X-Men's stealth sort of bomber/fighter design or Thunderbird 1 with swing wing?? Perhaps you have started a fantasy/Sci-Fi build thread? 'Show your wierdo's' ???? There are some greatr, unusual designs out there. Have you checked out the 'Rods' thread??? Whoa!!! Mulder and Scully where are you when we need you?

P S Some guy was even building the bomber bird thing from 'The Wall' movie?!!

If the motor is in the center, where will you put the battery to establish CG? Looks good. If anyone can get it to fly, it's you.

I am fairly certain that the CG is going to be ahead of the motor. From my experience with the other Round pizzabox type flyers they usually have the CG at about 1/3 from the nose.

As long as no one jumps in here an builds it before me (nstaller!!!) i will be building this one after the Imp SD. =)

Plans as soon as i make sure it flies right. The Klingon is a perfect example of one of my designs that needed a lot of changes to make fly right.

I think this one will turn out really well too.

I am kind of excited about it.

First paint and fly the Fury, then the Imp SD, then this. Somewhere in between i have a top secret design that is just for GPW though

Man...now why did you have to say that.....a "top secret" design....don't you know that if you are working on a "top secret" something or other the last thing you are supposed to do is say that....now we have to mobilize forces and search your PC....

I was wondering when you'd get to the Defiant Should roll like mad with all those surfaces working. It looks reasonably compact too so you should be able to get some speed out of it

Have you tried looking around for some green guard? It's made by Pactiv and while just slightly more heavy, It is better than the pink stuff. I had been told that they will have more stores selling it in the northland so you may just get lucky. Worth looking into.

Well i have FINALLY gotten to the build for this awesome ship!

Last night i cut all the pieces out and started applying the Gorilla Glue!

I have to say it is looking awesome. I will get some pictures up tonight. Should have a maiden this weekend. and of course their will be a full feature video!

I am quite excited about this one. I suspect it will be as good a flyer as the Enterprise-D

Should be tomorrow!!! Got another couple pieces drying right now.

Did you buy a Phlat Printer? Seems like that thing is going crazy!

I was checking with some people I know and it seems to me that you can probably get a plane cut by a pro for pretty cheap. I am going to start looking into it. With all these planes i have to build, cutting seems like the hardest part.

Yea, I went ahead and bought one. I hate cutting foam simply as I never seem to make it come out right. This will solve that problem anyway.

I hope to have it done soon though. I want to see it fly as well as get that video of mine and Installers in formation.

Maiden Flight!!!

I got in some flying with the Defiant today! And it flew ok... well it flew but i need more control.

I am having a hard time with my computer radio. I can't seem to figure out how to mix all my controls together.

I need to mix the aileron and elevons somehow. I want my Elevators to be linked to the ailerons so they act like elevons. I have a seperate servo on each control surface but no matter how i played with it. I can't get the darn thing to mix right.

Anyone have experience programming a JR XP652?

Anyhow, here are the pics and a video!!!

Once i am sure that I can make it fly reliably I will post the plans.

So you have Each Aileron servo on a seperate channel (dual aileron setup). So you have each elevator on a seperate channel too or are you using a "Y" harness? I have to assume that you have everything on a seperate channel.

To get an extra elevator input on my DX6i I use the cannards on the rudder channel and mix Elevator to Rudder. This gives me Elevons and another channel for an additional pitch servo.

You would have to use 2 mixes...if it can do it. Elevator to L Aileron and Elevator to R Aileron

When i did the aileron to Left it only moved in one direction. Basically it only went up not down.

I am sure there is a way to do it. I am just not sure how to do it. If i have to i will pull my dedicated elevon mixer out of the Imperial Star Destroyer to get it going. I was just hoping not to.

OK guys, I added the plans now.

I figured out how to get the darn mixing to work.... i basically made the plane an elevon with the back then added the ailerons as a seperate channel and mixed it 100% with my Aileron channel. It works great now.

I had some trouble with the flight characteristics of this thing. Well 2 problems.

THe first problem is the Ailerons were not very responsive at slower speeds. Even with the Elevon setup on the back it was hard to get this thing to roll very well.

The second problem was it was not very stable in the upright position. It kept wanting to roll over on it's back!!! With the lack of aileron i couldn't get it to come back. It would just go into an inverted flat spin and head out to sea... kinda like Maverick and Goose!!! Luckily i never lost my RIO. hahahaha

SO i have re-designed it. Made the nose a bit longer, added a vertical stabilizer, and moved the nacelles up higher so they are centered on the main Horizontal instead of hanging down below.

It flies ok as it is now. So i am not too worried about it until it turns upside down. The vertical and the moving the nacelles up should help. I also made the back end a lot wider so there is more control surface on the elevons.

I will get the CG after i build it. I am guessing it will be about an inch ahead of the nacelles though.

Have fun Nstaller and Kwinters

PhlatPrinter GCode cutout Defiant!

I converted your PDF plans to Raster and then drew the Vector ontop then used the Sketchup Phlatboyz G-Code plugin to convert it to CNC files. Here is the result! I plan to install the electronics later in the week and fly this weekend.

I am a little concerned about the problem i had with it rolling on it's back and staying that way.

I have not built it with the redesign yet but the way you have it, with the anhedral on the upper nacelle piece i looks like it might want to roll over.

The nice thing about the design is that if you do get in that position and can't get out just cut the power. It tends to fall flat and slow. Twice i took it all the way to the ground like that.

I forget where my CG ended up off the top of my head, I will have to measure it when i get home. But i know i put the battery almost at the nose. I have extended the nose on these plans too.

Also make sure you have the back control surfaces as Elevons. You NEED it

I like how it worked out with the Phlat Printer though. You going to share the codez with all the other Phlat-Bros?

Thanks SGTalon!

My hope is that there is little interaction between the nacelles and the main lifting body so I hope that the anhedral will not come into play. If she doesn't play nice I'll Break the nacelles free and re-glue them with polyhedral or I'll just put a gyro on the roll channel.

I'll setup the tail as elevon as well. I was going to set it up as dual elevator servo and leave the other 4 control surfaces as ailerons and spoilerons. Now I've got to figure out all the mixing in the DX7....

I am getting a new motor to power this bad boy. Looking at a Hacker!

Yes I posted the code already.

I had a hard time figuring out the mixing on my XP652.

Basically what i ended up doing is setting up the Elevons first with the standard Elevon/Delta mix in the radio. THen i added the Ailerons to another channel with a Y-Splitter that was slaved to the aileron channel with 100% mix.

Works great.

One of the problems with the Ailerons on the nacelles is at low speed they are not very effective. This is why i increased the size of the tail surfaces by about 75%. THey are right in the slip stream too so it should really help a lot.

I don't know when i will be having time to put together the new version. You may have yours flying before i get version 2 up.

Mine rolled on its back as well when I throttle down. With thrust it flies "OK". I've added more vertical surface to the tail and will try again as soon as the rain lets up.

I dig anything that is Star Trek, so when I saw a pic of the U.S.S. Defiant on the U.S.S. Tempest thread I just had to stop by and check it out. It's a great looking bird! I would love to see it fly when it's complete. I'm subscribing to this thread to follow the build.

Thanks Robert.

It has been a while since I pulled the Defiant out of space dock. I haven't had a lot of time for airplanes the last year or so. So i am way behind on my stuff. I have an X-Wing, Klingon D7, and Viper kit that need to be finalized before I get back to the Defiant. I also want to take another crack at the Babylon 5 Fury

It is definitely on the list though.
