Hi Rick,

Thanks for the assist!

I was thinking about what Smokin' Joe said about having to be current. Well, if you're going to be "Jones-sy" with the fast crowd that's really a poor perception of what to do. There are many very good aircraft designs now available, all of which can win a contest on any given day with the right pilot behind the transmitter. You don't have to be current to win or even be competitive. A foamie won the Rose Bowl one year and I beleive a Duck has won the AMA Nats within its' class more than once. I didn't see pilots scrambling to buy a foamie nor a Duck when that happened. I have always been of the opinion that if what you fly does not deliver the performance that you demand and are capable of using, then by all means, upgrade. But if you simply think that having the latest and greatest model will win a contest for you, then think again. You have to know how to use that tool to make the tool work for you. Based on that theory of mine, I say that having the original version Xplorer is no handicap, by any means. It remains one of the most potent airframes in the arsenal.

Looks like the X4000 has a 120mm (4.75") longer fuse, while the 3800 shares the same fuse with the 3.5M original.

I'll admit to being lazy tonight but can you guys chime in on what you settled on for CG without me going back through the whole thread?

I have one I need to finish by Wednesday and just need a close starting point.

Thanks in advance,

Sean

CG Location for Xplorer

I started at 108 and have not felt any reason to change it as it flys great there. Also can put either set of ballast and not change it at all.

See Ya,

Pat

standrd vs' electric

Folks, how does the 3.5M standard Xplorer compare to the electric version? How does the added weight from the power sytem affect the thermaling of the electric version? I hesitate which version to opt for? Is there a thread dedicated to electric Xplorers?

Thanks

Ok I like it. I had my maiden this afternoon around 12 noon. Its a great day out with 5 knots of wind. I did a range check and got 120 paces and thought that was good enough. I hand tossed it and tried the flaps. Ineeds a lot of elevator comp for full flaps. I did 2 tosses and was gonna break out the zip starter. As Im sitting there I feel a thermal come thru. I stepped on the fiels and threw into it and specked out. Now thats a good way to start out the maiden. I land take a break and wait for a few guys to fly. They land and I see some barn swallows at about 70 feet just east of the field. Grab the Xplorer and throw into it again and thermal out.

I didnt even need the zip starter. 2 good flights and I called it the day. I needed to come hoime and beat the kids when they got off the bus.

The DLG stuff really pays off. My arm is a little sore from throwing hard into the 2 thermals but well worth it.

Goinav8n,

How bad were the kids, that you had to beat them as soon as they got off the bus?
