2 x 3s packs want to charge them in series HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi guys i need your help PLEASE.
i have MANY 3s 2200 mlh packs and i want to be able to connect 2 3s pack into series so that i can charge and balance 2 packs at once. my li-pos use the older style balance tabs so i bought connectors to suit. How do i connect them up to the flight power 6 s balance lead ? Attached are some pictures of what i have tried so far. black to black then cell 1 2 3 then black to black cell 4 5 6 This is exactaly the SAME way the flight power leads are as new all i have done is changed over the type of conecter. BUT it dose not work. i can plug in the first pack and it works fine cells 1 2 3 recognise but when i plug in the second plug it always shorts out on the BLACK lead on the second plug. HOW DO I DO THIS PLEASE HELP ME. |

First off I do not have that battery or balancer so following may not apply however.....
It is common to have the last balancing lead of the first pack and the firt balancing lead of the second pack connected to the same point. See 7S example here. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...2&postcount=35 It is also very important that when poer leads are connected in series that the combined 6S pack powere leads match the balance leads. pack(6S) neg. is same as first balancing neg. lead. Here's a photo of what I do with my TP stuff -- note 2S packs are plugged into the 5S port.
The drawing shows the wiring needed to use the Cell Shield with two 3S packs -- a similar arrangement to a balancer. |

It looks like the balance harness for your charger already has the connection made for two cell packs. This connection should work.

Charging two packs in series only works for extremely similar packs. I see you have a 20C pack and a 25C pack and that might be a big problem. Cell Pro 10S would be a great upgrade for you, or look 4 two Cell Pro 4S units.
I am not partial to any brand charger and am only using these as an example. I use a TP1010 and TP205 balancer and am now on the look for something more for multiple 2S and 3S LiPos, and Cell Pro is on top of my short list. IMO Units that charge through the main power connector and balance on the side are the worst for doing series charging. Those that charge through the tap connectors are the easiest. Hey .... I am with you on trying to charge more batteries faster. Doing it wrong can be quite costly. |

Parallel charging / discharging is benign to pack capacity and usage history. Only concern of note is cell count and voltage level prior to connecting in parallel. Series charging demands that the cells are very closely matched and have the same usage history (charged and discharged as a single series pack) in order to absolutely prevent a catastrophic event. I personally would never attempt to series charge two discreet packs as the risk is not worth the benefit to me, especially when there is a far safer alternative (parallel charging). Mark |
