F-Plane - A simple build

I built this plane in 3 hours out of frustration from the worst two weeks of flying AP Iíve ever had. As I was leaving for the field, I joked with my wife saying, ďIím going to crash another plane, be back in an hour.Ē As it turned out, it flew great & I didnít crash!

Itís not much to look at but will get the job done. Now that I know it works, Iíll improve the design with camera mounts and different wings. AUW is 35 7/8oz.

Below is one of my famous ďPine TreeĒ videos from the maiden at my skunk works field tonight. (If you like pine trees, youíll love this!) Itís just an example of the platform.

A vid from the ground:
AP - Plane (1 min 36 sec)

A vid from the plane:
Aerial Video (2 min 55 sec)

UPDATE: Here is the fuse plan as of 11/10/2008

Here is the 12"x36" tail section - Added 11/20/2008

UPDATE: 7/9/2009 Added "High Boy" fuse plans. See this post for additional information. Thank you dmimlitch for taking the time to create these!

I love it!

And the video was nice and slow and stable. Great flying conditions I guess?

And now some questions..

What battery, engine, ESC, etc did you use?
What was the total weight, fuse length, wing span/chord?

If you provide me with a simple sketch with measurements I'll throw together a replica in no time

What camera are you using? Someone told me they thought you were using a Casio, but it doesn't look like mine does...

Hi Paulrene,

"Great flying conditions, you guess?" Thatís my superior piloting skills! ...Right.

Below are some pics with dimensions. (I'm not a CAD guy...)
The AUW is 35 7/8 oz
The Battery is a Zippy 3s 2200 mAh 20c
The motor is a Turnigy / Axi Clone - 2808-1100Kv
11x7 APC (Yes, I know it's over proped on paper but it works just fine for me.)

CanopicJar, I'm using a Magpie AP wing on this setup. 54"x10". I plan on cutting a 60" x 10.5 Clark YM15.

Yank, I'm using a Canon SD1000 these days.

Flies beautifully, Tim! Nice work. You sure have a lot of trees!

Of course it'll be a quite fragile in a crash

Lovin' this florida weather!
Wow... that's the strangest looking AP platform i've seen yet......

Just make sure you don't "over amp" your motor/ESC with that APC 11X7 prop. A 10X5 would probably work well.

Other than that.... I'd have to say, that's a nice setup you've got there!

Now go shoot some more vid's/photo's!!

I'm about to head out myself... I'd be a fool to pass up flying on a day like today, with only 5mph winds!

Edit: Scratch that.... 9mph winds, now. But, still no problem for my warbirds...

Fun and safe flying

Ah yes....nothing strange looking about this bird at all simple always gets it in my book. There is a ton of merit in simplicity that works.

Great job Tim

I made this drawing by best effort in Google Sketchup based on your photos.

@troynh: Could you please verify that I got it correct?

That looks right on. The only thing not in the drawing is a skid ski at the rear of the stick. Thanks for doing that! Thanks for the kind comments too guys!

I took it out for a quick flight this afternoon with a Clark YM15 10.5 and it flew great. I also shot another video but one pine tree video is enough. What kind of stinks is that we're leaving on vacation tomorrow and I'll be unable to experiment with it for a week.

Below are some shots of the other wing.

Added the tail skid and cropped the image a bit.

What kind of wing span and chord length is that (new) wing?

That looks great! The span is 60, the chord is 10.5.

I'm off to Bar Harbor Maine for the week. Talk again when I return
