Harrier replica from JSAMVTOL aka Pivotal Aero???


JSAMVTOL claimed some time ago that he has a flying prototype:

Harrier


Still have it..decided not to pursue it (Harrier) at this time. Cost to manufacture would be ridiculously obscene, and the timing well is just not right. Apologies to those that were excited...well I was too. There were simply too many advanced steps to construction to kit it as well.

Development hasn't stopped, changed direction and is continuing, but not in rc.

Psionic101 should be happy...he's spent a lot of time building his Harrier, I wish him the best.

I would ignore that JSAMVTOL guy its just vapourware.............

Just returning the complement where you talked about my F35b project.

I do like your harrier concept though and as you found its not easy.

Will post pictures of my vapourware later today...........

Have you updated the design to use LiPoly batteries yet? If it could hover on the original NiMH switching to modern batteries should give you plenty of excess thrust to play with. Perhaps enough to incorporate tip jets for roll control.

Nice work Doc.

Can I ask why you'd build a VTOL out of balsa? She's going to be so brittle and bound to get knocked about during ground testing (I assume). Why not EPS/EPP?

Hope all your hard work pays off and I look forward to seeing some hover action.

Just been over to Youtube having a look at some of the model videos, and came across this R/C Harrier, it was put on YT back in February so it probably has already been seen here, but still fascinating -

yeah, that's the Aerofly Pro Deluxe sim that includes a Harrier. It's quite hard to fly so that person did well to bring it in that clean.

Here is a video of a ducted-fan harrier flying.

Before starting the engine, the pilot said he wasn't sure what was going to happen because a few days earlier the engine had spit out the glow plug stripping the threads in the cylinder head. This is a Rossi 1.05 ducted fan engine running on very high compression. So now, after repairing that, he wasn't sure if the compression was at the proper level or not. However, as you can see, he does get off the ground. He makes the hovering and flying look easy, but it is very challenging. This pilot has above-average flying skills. For example, there was one day about two years ago when he was flying it (just short hops that time... not enough power) and he said he was having a terrible time controlling it before discovering that one of the gyros was reversed. I asked him, are you saying that you had to control it with the gyro fighting against you. His reply: Well... yeah (then he just smiled).

That's Excellent!. Looks like the nozzles were fixed at maybe 45 or so by the way it flew.

No, he has two servos on each of the four nozzels plus two more on the exhaust deflector at the tail. Plus there is a duct going to each wing tip and a servo to control each of those wing tip puffers. So all of these things are controlable. This one is the full enchelada (except no retracts). It seems that the only thing left to overcome is having enough power.
