Build Log

AX my new glider, easy to build, easy to fly. Photos &Videos

When I design AX I was thinking on the beginner.
The concept -laser cut and very easy to assemble is the main line of this design.

Some Ax features.
A glider for cheap servos, engine, prop, and radio.
Easy to build sophisticated on appearance.
Light and, and easy to transport.
Easy to fix and repair
Good performance on thigh thermals, flyable in any small place.
Strong and resistant.
Good L/D

Some Ax data
Wingspan -74’”
Wing chord at root 9”
Wing chord at tip 5”1/2
Aspect ratio 8.6
Wing Area 41 dm2
Airfoil HQ 3,0-10 – HQ 3,0-9
Spars rounded spruce 3/16 diam.
Weight empty 10oz (on structure)

Some Ax photos on structure, after more photos covered, and in flight.

Hope you like it!

About the plans

PDF was made in real scale.

In case you need to copy the plan, any bureau, can make it.

In Brazil we use Xerox system.

great job, great designer.....
this airmodel is a dream!!

tomorow we go to choice the balsa!

This is a big ideia to use spars in 90 and 10% of airfoil.
I want to test this airfoil HQ 3,0-10 and HQ 3,0-9.

Hi Andy

Ax is covered, and made its first flight.
I really don’t know about the winglet effect, but the glide ratio, is superb.
Maybe because of HQ airfoil, or maybe the winglet, or both.

Despite the poor engine performance, I use any cheap and Chinese engine has option, the model climb fast and vertical.

The plans for anyone that want to build this model, are free and ,just in case of any doubts call me.

Thanks for the nice words.

Cebola,

Of course, you must show us some photos!

I love the fuse design. What is the flying weight of your new Ax?

AX is now ready to fly.
Very docile, and climbs like a missile.
One thing on this model is the finishing of airfoil myth.
I choose any HQ, that’s looks like good for the kind of model, no complicated calculations, no any theory.
Just use the airfoil.
The result was very good and the model is a dream to fly.

Hope you like it.

OK, tell us about the winglets.

Are they just "looks about right" or have you done some kind of testing to see their effectiveness? I have been thinking about setting up a test stand that would measure drag and lift of a mounted airfoil section, similar to the thrust stands you see here for measuring static thrust, but more sensitive, using a small wind tunnel for measuring the effectiveness of different winglet designs..

Hi Andy

About the winglets, I decide to use because I never see any better solution for wingtips.
Normally this part of model, nobody cares, or is a simple balsa block carved in a smart shape, using the airfoil has reference.
Some facts: Despite low aspect ratio, Ax performs a very good glide ratio, better than my Hyperbolic Lady, behaves very reliable on tight turns in small thermals, and keeps a straight path, like a locomotive on Track.
I realize that is a good solution, and I can see a big difference in flight characteristics.
I know that this subject is very discussable, mainly because I did not use any theory, or aerodynamically resource to design the winglets.
