DLG flying at the Chandler Bowl

Lee Wolfe (RotorCycle here on RCGroups) has been busy getting a lot of us hooked into flying DLGs at Thude Park (a.k.a. Chandler Bowl) in Chandler, AZ. Here's a little video I posted out on Vimeo for your viewing pleasure!

DLG Evening (5 min 6 sec)

Note: to see this video in a larger format, with HD turned on, hover over the embedded video then click on the word “Vimeo”! I do not recommend watching full-screen as it wasn't rendered for that (unless your monitor is pretty tiny)!

That looks like the perfect way to spend an afternoon! I watched that video and sang along with Pink Floyd 4 times! I gotta get my chores done so I can do some flying!! Thanks for a great way to start the day. That vid goes well with coffee!

I guess I'm going to have to bring my Arrow out there more often. I've found some crazy thermals out of that field.

Throwdown,

Will that plane turn to the right?

I noticed that every turn in the 5 minute video was to the left.

That seems to be the only way to thermal at that field. Every right turn you are in sink, but left you are in the thermal. And it doesn't matter which side of the field.

That's funny cuz I tend to turn to the left when I fly too. Lee was at the east end of the field... maybe the thermals spiral different there and left is the "right" way to go!

I had a 25 minute flight last weekend with my full-house Photon II. That was my personal best. I've only had it for a couple of weeks now and I'm loving every minute of it.

The bowl is drawing more and more DLG flyers. Charlie and George are our resident DLG gurus and it's always a blast watching them launch side by side at the same time!

I'll probably be out there on Friday.

But to get to the Chandler Bowl, I take the 101 to Ray road. Get off and head east. First light, turn right (going south). Go till it dead ends to a park. You'll find the bowl in the bowl. The ramada is the pits, the runway is pretty easy to spot.

Sorry to end the mystery on the earth's rotation, swirling thermals, or unseen power vortexes causing left turns

Actually any right turns would have put us right into the main flight path and over the runway. So when flying from the left side of the field where we were, it was safest to turn left and fly over the adjacent field.

When no fast movers are up, we take up the whole field by turning right

On the weekends we've been flying mostly on the west side where there's more room, and hogging the whole field. Of course, it's not long before we're HIGHER than all the planes and helis

The field is plenty large enough, we were just in one corner off the end of the runway. A right turn would have been in the flight path of some planes and jets flying at the time. The other end of the field was wide open, not to mention there is a southern quadrant that no one uses. You'll see a DLG or two out there sometimes.

John, the Bowl is bigger than Coyote Basin. But unlike the Coyote Basin, the bowl can get packed with electrics (it is their only field after all). And almost all the lift generally heads towards the freeway and the apartments (which are technically outside the boundaries of the flying area).
