Question

Bright LED lights for wing tips Where to buy?

Looking for bright LED lights for jet wing tips. Need to be able to see them when the jet is coming straight in so I can easily tell if the wings are level when coming in at high speed from further out. Not and EE so would like to be able to plug and play for the most part. Soldering is not a problem. I did a search and the latest info I could find here was 2 yrs old.

Would like two clear focused beam lights.
Clear covers for them would be nice.
Run off of receiver so 4.8 or 6.0v.
No switch needed as empty channel could turn on and off.

Help!

Just got this from Bob Belloumini.

Seems a little pricey but I haven't anyone else to compare them to just yet.

Carl,

Take a look at this. I don't know if they would be bright enough. You could then buy the lenses elsewhere.

What color LEDs do you want? And how bright? Running off the receiver batt will limit how much current you can source. I wouldnt want to draw 1amp for lights off my Rx battery, so a luxeon setup might be out of the question.

I have really wide angle LEDs that I use to tell wing orientation. Same kind I use on the afterburner circuit I made:
RC afterburner effect, Phase 3 F-16 flight test (0 min 24 sec)

I was just looking for white LEDs but the brighter the better I would think. Wanted to avoid additional weight so that was the reason for running off rx. You are right about not wanting to draw an amp though.
Thought Dimension was out of light business. Will look again. thanks for the tip.

Here is one site that if they dont ave a set that meets your needs they will custom make one for you. I have a link for another site that has a set that has 2 clear bright lights, 2 nav lights (red & green), and a strobe and Can be run off of spare channel on RX. But I dont have the site on this comp. Will post it when I get home after work. The set I am mentioning on the site I have at home is in the $30-$40 range.

Here's a link that might be interesting even though he designed it around helicopters. He provides it as a kit or complete system.

Mike, That is the one I was looking for. I was looking at the V2 kit which has most of what Carl was looking for. Price has gone up since I was looking at them but isn't that the story of most everything now adays?

If you dont find what you are looking for let me know. I have a lighting kit for a super cub, and I could most likely modify it for your needs. Plus if you get rid of some of the LEDs in the kit then cost goes down as well.

It can work off a servo channel no problem. Has several lighting modes too...

I don't know if this will do what you want. I use these for night flying. I really like that he makes them in custom wiring lengths to fit your needs. In my experience the flashing LEDs are pretty dim, but the white and green are quite bright and the red is pretty bright too.

Thanks all for responding! I picked up some LEDs and resistors at Radioshack and learned alot this weekend. I'll be ordering some different setups to see what works best. Will report what I find.
