Kevlar is supposed to creep a whole lot less than Spectra. Not sure we want creep in our spar wrapping.

Ya know gang, I was thinkin' and sure enough, there is a better supplier than pure profiteerings Is this price reasonable? I paid 20 bucks for 100 ft of 200 lb line in later '90's!

Egads! It's a GIRL!

I see a familiar splash of color on the front page. Thanks Steve!

Not much work got done on the BoT today. Lil got a little distracted, trying out new ideas and colors. Well, maybe in a way it WAS BoT work: I tried out new patterns, using materials on hand to see how they look. Yeeeaaaaahhh, that's it.

Do not open until tomorrow night:

I can't wait.

I WAS supposed to also try out microwave dying silk, but I ran out of black and yellow.

I really did learn something: I can't use the normal squeezy bottles on the silk-- it'll be a ghastly mess. Instead, I'll use cheap 1/2" paint brushes to apply the dye in a more reasonable manner. This is also true for the inner part of the familiar spiral and starburst patterns found on many hippie clothes.

I wonder if someone here can help me... I need 2 pcs of 0.3mm x 2.0mm x 1 meter carbon fiber strip for capping ribs. Trying to order online and bumping up against minimum order quantites and high shipping costs. I thought maybe the woodie folks might know a source. Thanks in advance.

Nice pics everyone, and as for age...

... I'm a ripe old 24 and couldn't care less. I've done everything in reverse and own a vintage car, two motorbikes and an airplane. Next on the list is police academy (cue bad jokes) then buying a house with my girl.

Old? No... just tired. Everyone gets tired but, from what I gather, it gets worse the more experienced you get with it.

EDIT: Piper - nice one mate, you own the girl? Looking at getting a 3/4 size single-seat J3 after I sell my twin seat Gardan. Check out HobbyKing for carbon but I'm afraid postage will get you most places as its dimensionally based. HK are cheap though so postage isn't too much of a hit.

Spectra is a polyethylene-based fiber. As you might expect, it creeps under a steady load like its close relative, the plastic garbage bag.

I tried using Spectra fish line to pull some dihedral into the wing of a GWS Lite Stik. By the next morning almost all of the dihedral was gone.

I tried it as an actuation cable for some early prototype spoilers for the 2-meter Chrysalis, where i used a spring to open them and the cable to positively hold them shut (so they could not suck open on launch like the conventional spring-closed method can). It required re-rigging at least daily to stay in proper adjustment.

The other problem with Spectra is that polyethylene is fiendishly difficult to bond to, almost as bad as Teflon. Unless you can get the fibers treated with just the right "sizing" (i.e.: chemical treatment/coating to promote adhesion), you are likely to have poor bonding to the matrix resin, causing poor compressive and shear strength, poor impact properties, debond problems, etc..

You might try Radical RC. Your local hobby shop might also have something usable.

I've bought carbon pultrusion from A2Z Corp for rib capping. I use the 3mm x 0.13mm x 10m roll.
