Build, fly, learn!

The Owl-RT 3D Depron lightweight trainer

Hi,
This is the Owl-RT, wingspan 806mm (31.7"). It is built from 3mm Depron (1 sheet), a spruce spar and various other easy to find materials and components. AUW is 240~280g (8.5~10oz) depending on motor and battery, but can be built as light as 200g if you skip the landing gear and use balsa for the spar. A 100~120W motor is recommended, a properly rewound BW is probably perfect.
A detailed build log, plans and flight reports can be found in my blog here at RCGroups.
The main features of the Owl-RT are:
  • Aerobatics and basic 3D capable.
  • Indoors and outdoors (up to 20km/h winds).
  • Easy and inexpensive to build and repair.
  • Small enough to easily fit on the back seat of my compact car.
  • Can fly very slowly with full control authority.
  • Very gentle stall (nose tips down).
  • Unlimited vertical with the right motor.
  • Good documentation.

Baisden Bipe

The Baisden Bipe was designed by Don Baisden. The build log is from Larry Fortna (flashsolutions).

This 34" wingspan Bipe is made with 6mm Depron.

BowStick - Basic design, Simple to build, Easy to fly and Absolute fun, fun, fun.

I thought of naming this model “Absolute Fun” because that is exactly what she is!

No abstract exotic design that will change aviation forever. She’s just a basic design, simple to build, easy to fly and an absolute fun, fun, fun foam model. She’s built on a Slow Stick frame but nothing like the old SS. I used a large motor for great performance and she can be easily flown in a small/tight place. She's my favorite and I can’t tell you why she’s my favorite but sometimes simplicity and comfort rank higher than we are unconsciously aware of. Here's my thread...

38" Superfly-Megafly clone

This is a close SF copy built using 6mm depron. I had been experimenting with a KFm4 airfoil with the top step at 50% and the bottom step at 40%..
It has surpassed all my expectations, it will fly hands off upright and inverted for a considerable distance. It has a wide speed range and is very manouverable.
The double KF step has produced a very strong and stiff wing..With its tape covering it will take a lot of abuse

google sketchup construction files in post 52 if you use the google sketchup program you can scale this to any wingspan in just a few seconds..below is the lines.skp for sketchup in the zip

The Octagon 29.5" a variation on a Nutball

This large NB variation is built from 6mm depron and has a KFm2 profile...that is a 50% top step.

The build notes start here and the info applies to any of the KF stepped wings..
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...1#post10942681

If you dont like the octagon shape make it as a circle at 32" diameter...This is my BIG nutball ....Both fly superbly as R.E.T controlled planes..
The original nutball started as a 17" dia epp construct...and is one of the most fun things to fly...If you havnt built a nutball .. read the thread ..then add one to your fleet ..they really make you smile

The youtube video is here..
The octagon or 8ball - a Nutball version KFm2 (3 min 34 sec)

.Dont be put off by the one in the picture which is tatty..This was made by cutting up a different version...Like the nutball it flys very very well, from exteemly slow to wild and fast

Flying Wing 43" span a zagi type using the KFm4 profile

17 1/2oz AUW ... span 43"... 11.1 2200 lipo ..9x5gws prop ...large bell motor from overlander UK ...esc and rec ..the motor draws about 11A full power on this setup, and gives 24oz thrust....so it goes well
I was trying to compare it to my zagi, but in every way it goes better.
top speed much the same, but ive a more expensive faster motor on the zagi.
slow speed, as it is so much more stallproof, you can get it to high alpha, and walk it by..
glides great, hands off flat glide..in the glide you can get it to full up elevator no power without any problems, it just hangs there in the breeze, the zagi stalls like a good'n if your speed gets too low, and thats still easy flying speed for this wing.
Rolls fine.
Loops are a bit larger than I like, but my cog is in a very safe forward position, and will probably stay there. It has plenty enough elevator authority for turns and landing.
overall cost ...a better solution ...+..cheap 9gm servos, cheap motor etc... airframe total cost about £10.... a zagi costs about £30

construction notes here https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...postcount=1955

video here..
Double KF wing KFm4 (4 min 43 sec)

Ive since fitted it with my removeable UC for rise off ground, which I prefer...

Foamies (Scratchbuilt) > Plans For Scratchbuilt Foamies

Action was fast and furious from the first horn. Northwesters were in tough and they fell. Harris and Dick Salter went out as did Matheny, Rush,Wilson and Green. Day 2 saw Rein, Burdick, Milissa and Tony Huber, Richie Salter and the Alien fight hard but soon they were dropping. In the final nine only one local remained, Richie Salter. Mike Evans, Andy Mears, Ron Colombo, Chris Jensen, Steve Stewart, Allen DeVeuve, John Duane and the Alien were the rest.
